Frame your degree as directly relevant
H-1B approval for mobile developers hinges on your degree matching the role. Computer science, software engineering, or information systems degrees are straightforward. If your degree is adjacent, document how your coursework directly supports mobile development work.
Highlight platform specialization, not just general coding skills
Employers and USCIS both respond better to specificity. Native iOS with Swift, native Android with Kotlin, or cross-platform React Native experience signals a defined specialty occupation, which strengthens the H-1B petition considerably compared to vague full-stack claims.
Target companies with an active H-1B filing history
Many mid-size product companies and fintech startups sponsor mobile developers regularly but don't advertise it. Searching visa-sponsorship-specific job boards like Migrate Mate filters for employers already willing to file, saving you from dead-end applications.
Understand the LCA and prevailing wage requirement
Before your employer files the H-1B petition, they must certify a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor confirming your offered compensation meets the prevailing wage for your role and location. This step happens before you see any USCIS paperwork.
OPT STEM extension buys you extra H-1B lottery attempts
If your degree is in computer science, engineering, or a related STEM field, you qualify for a 24-month OPT extension. That gives you up to three H-1B registration cycles before your work authorization expires, meaningfully improving your lottery odds over time.
Cap-exempt employers are an underused alternative path
Universities, university-affiliated research organizations, and nonprofits attached to higher education are exempt from the H-1B cap. Mobile developer roles at these institutions can be filed any time of year, bypassing the lottery entirely if the role fits their mission.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does mobile developer qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, mobile developer roles consistently qualify as specialty occupations when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field. USCIS has a well-established record of approving H-1B visa petitions for iOS and Android engineers, particularly when the employer documents that a theoretical and practical application of computer science is required to perform the job.
What if my degree is not in computer science, can I still get H-1B sponsorship as a mobile developer?
Yes, but it requires more documentation. USCIS accepts degrees in closely related fields such as information technology, mathematics, or electrical engineering. If your degree is in an unrelated field, you can substitute three years of specialized work experience for each year of missing education. A strong portfolio and employer letter explaining why the specific degree or equivalent is required for the role will be critical to approval.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for mobile developers most often?
Large tech companies, fintech firms, healthcare technology companies, and enterprise software providers are the most consistent sponsors. Product-focused companies with dedicated mobile teams are more likely to sponsor than agencies or consulting firms, which sometimes avoid the cost and complexity. Migrate Mate lists mobile developer roles specifically filtered for visa sponsorship, so you can focus your search on employers already committed to filing.
Are H-1B approval rates for mobile developers affected by the job title on the petition?
Job title alone doesn't determine approval, but it does shape how USCIS evaluates the specialty occupation requirement. Titles like 'iOS Engineer,' 'Android Software Engineer,' or 'Mobile Platform Developer' tend to support stronger petitions than generic titles like 'Software Developer' because they signal a narrower, technically defined role. The employer's description of duties and the degree requirement they establish matter more than the title itself.
Can I switch employers mid-H-1B if I find a better mobile developer role?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to change employers once your petition has been pending or approved for at least 180 days and you have an approved I-140 or have been in H-1B status. Your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition, and you can begin working as soon as it's filed, without waiting for approval. The new role must still qualify as a specialty occupation in the same general category.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Mobile Developer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
