Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do news reporters qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
News reporters can qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field and involves specialized duties like investigative reporting, multimedia production, or beat-specific expertise. The role must demonstrate specialty occupation requirements beyond general news gathering.
What degree do I need for news reporter visa sponsorship?
Most sponsored news reporter positions require a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or a related field. Some employers accept degrees in specific subject areas like economics for financial reporters or political science for political correspondents, combined with journalism experience.
Which news organizations sponsor work visas?
Major news networks, national newspapers, digital media companies, and specialized publications sponsor H-1B visas for reporters. Organizations like Reuters, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal, and various digital news startups have sponsored international journalists, particularly for specialized beats requiring unique expertise.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for reporters?
H-1B sponsorship for news reporters is highly competitive due to industry consolidation and budget constraints. Approval rates are higher for specialized roles requiring unique skills or language abilities. Positions at established media organizations with history of successful sponsorships typically have better success rates.
Can freelance journalists get visa sponsorship?
Freelance journalists typically cannot get H-1B sponsorship as it requires a traditional employer-employee relationship. However, staff positions at news organizations that accept freelance work, or contract positions structured as employment relationships, may qualify for sponsorship if they meet specialty occupation requirements.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored News Reporter jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
