How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Nuclear Engineer
Target national laboratories and DOE contractors
National laboratories like Oak Ridge, Argonne, and Sandia are among the most active sponsors for nuclear engineers. Government contractors supporting the Department of Energy file LCAs regularly and have established sponsorship infrastructure.
Confirm your security clearance eligibility early
Many nuclear engineering roles require a security clearance, which is only available to U.S. citizens. On a work visa, you'll need to target roles that explicitly don't require clearance or work with foreign nationals on unclassified programs.
Match your degree field precisely to the role
Nuclear engineering is a defined specialty occupation. A degree in mechanical or electrical engineering may qualify for some roles, but only if the job description explicitly ties those disciplines to the reactor or nuclear systems work involved.
Prioritize employers with H-1B filing history
Not all energy companies sponsor visas. Focus on large utilities, defense contractors, and reactor design firms with documented H-1B filing history. These employers already understand the process and are far more likely to move forward.
Understand the cap-exempt employer advantage
Positions at universities, national laboratories, and certain nonprofits affiliated with research institutions are H-1B cap-exempt. That means you can start any time of year without waiting for the April lottery, which is a significant advantage.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsors who hire visa holders
Migrate Mate filters jobs by sponsorship willingness, so you're not applying blind. For a niche field like nuclear engineering, targeting the right employers from the start saves significant time and increases your odds of a successful outcome.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Is nuclear engineering a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Nuclear engineering consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation because it requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering or a directly related field. USCIS has a strong track record of approving H-1B petitions for nuclear engineers, particularly at national laboratories, reactor design firms, and nuclear utilities.
Can I work as a nuclear engineer in the U.S. on a visa if many roles require security clearance?
Security clearances are restricted to U.S. citizens, which eliminates a significant portion of nuclear engineering positions, particularly those with the Department of Defense or classified DOE programs. However, many commercial nuclear utilities, reactor vendors like Westinghouse and GE Hitachi, and research institutions hire visa holders on unclassified work. Focus your search on those employers.
Does my nuclear engineering degree from outside the U.S. qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
It can, but your degree needs to be evaluated for U.S. equivalency. A three-year bachelor's degree may not automatically be accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree. Most employers will require a credential evaluation from a recognized service. A master's degree largely removes this concern and strengthens your petition considerably.
Are nuclear engineering jobs typically cap-subject or cap-exempt for the H-1B?
It depends on the employer. Positions at universities and DOE-affiliated national laboratories are cap-exempt, meaning you can start without waiting for the April lottery. Roles at private companies, including utilities and contractors, are cap-subject. Given how competitive the lottery is, targeting cap-exempt employers is a strategically sound move for this field.
Where can I find nuclear engineering jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists nuclear engineering roles specifically from employers open to sponsoring work visas. Because the field is niche and many postings don't clearly state sponsorship availability, using a platform that filters for it upfront saves considerable time. Browse current openings on Migrate Mate to identify employers actively hiring visa holders.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Nuclear Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
