How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Power Systems Engineering
Target utilities and energy companies directly
Large investor-owned utilities and independent power producers file H-1B petitions regularly. Focus your search on companies with active grid modernization or renewable integration projects, where specialized power systems expertise is hardest to source domestically.
Align your degree field precisely
H-1B specialty occupation requires a degree in a directly related field. Electrical engineering, power engineering, or energy systems are strong fits. A general engineering degree may face scrutiny, so gather transcripts that highlight power systems coursework.
Highlight PE licensure or progress
A Professional Engineer license strengthens your sponsorship case by demonstrating a U.S.-recognized professional standard. Even passing the FE exam signals commitment and can differentiate your application when employers compare sponsored versus non-sponsored candidates.
Flag renewable energy project experience
Solar interconnection, wind farm integration, and battery storage are active hiring areas where employers struggle to find qualified candidates. Sponsorship approval rates tend to be higher when demand clearly outpaces the available domestic talent pool.
Ask about cap-exempt employers early
Universities, national laboratories like Argonne or NREL, and certain nonprofit research organizations are exempt from the H-1B lottery. Power systems roles at these institutions can be sponsored year-round without waiting for the annual April registration window.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Not every employer listing mentions visa sponsorship explicitly. Migrate Mate surfaces power systems engineering roles from companies with documented H-1B filing histories, so you spend time on applications with a realistic path to sponsorship approval.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Is power systems engineering a strong field for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes. Power systems engineering sits within electrical engineering, which USCIS consistently recognizes as a specialty occupation requiring at minimum a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Employers in utilities, renewable energy, and grid infrastructure file H-1B petitions regularly for these roles, and demand for qualified engineers often exceeds domestic supply, which supports sponsorship decisions.
What degree do I need for a power systems engineering visa sponsorship?
A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, power engineering, or a closely related discipline is the standard requirement. Degrees in general engineering or physics may qualify if your coursework included substantial power systems content, but employers and immigration attorneys will assess transcript alignment. Graduate degrees in power systems strengthen the specialty occupation argument, particularly for senior or research-focused roles.
Can I get sponsored at a national laboratory or university for power systems work?
Yes, and this is often the more reliable path. National laboratories like NREL, Argonne, and PNNL, as well as universities with power systems research programs, qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers. That means they can file petitions year-round without entering the lottery, giving you a faster and more predictable sponsorship timeline than private-sector employers subject to the annual cap.
Does a Professional Engineer license help with visa sponsorship for this role?
It strengthens your case but isn't required. A PE license signals that your qualifications meet a recognized U.S. professional standard, which can help an employer's immigration attorney build the specialty occupation argument. For roles involving public utility work or signing off on engineering designs, PE licensure may also be a job requirement independent of visa considerations.
Where can I find power systems engineering jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists power systems engineering roles from employers with verified H-1B sponsorship histories, so you can focus on opportunities where sponsorship is genuinely on the table. General job boards rarely surface this information reliably. Filtering by sponsorship willingness upfront saves significant time, especially if you're working against an OPT or grace period deadline.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Power Systems Engineering jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
