Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a SAP ABAP Consultant
Target system integrators first
Large SAP consulting firms like Accenture, Deloitte, and Capgemini sponsor H-1B visas regularly and have established immigration processes. They hire ABAP consultants at scale, making them far more likely to sponsor than mid-size or boutique IT shops.
Align your degree to the role
USCIS expects your degree field to directly relate to ABAP development. Computer science, information systems, and software engineering degrees are the strongest fit. A mismatched degree in an unrelated field can trigger a Request for Evidence on specialty occupation grounds.
Emphasize module specialization in applications
Employers value ABAP consultants with deep expertise in specific SAP modules, such as FI, SD, or MM. Demonstrating specialization signals seniority, which strengthens the case that your role requires a degree and supports H-1B petition approval.
Document your SAP certifications upfront
SAP-certified professionals are easier for employers to sponsor because certifications reinforce specialty occupation status. Include all relevant SAP certification details in your resume before applying, as employers factor credential strength into sponsorship decisions.
Understand the H-1B cap timeline early
Most ABAP consultant roles are cap-subject, meaning registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, confirm your end date against this timeline and identify cap-exempt employers as a backup option to avoid gaps.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Not all employers advertising SAP ABAP roles are willing to sponsor. Migrate Mate surfaces jobs specifically from employers with a documented history of sponsorship, saving you time spent applying to positions that will stall at the visa question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SAP ABAP Consultant considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS consistently approves SAP ABAP Consultant roles as specialty occupations because the work requires theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, and a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field is a standard industry requirement for the position. Denial rates for this job title are low relative to other IT roles.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor my H-1B as an SAP ABAP Consultant?
Most sponsoring employers require a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, software engineering, or a closely related technical field. If your degree is in a different discipline, a combination of education and relevant SAP ABAP work experience may satisfy USCIS requirements using the three-for-one equivalency rule, though this adds petition complexity.
Which types of employers sponsor SAP ABAP Consultants for H-1B visas?
The most active sponsors are large SAP implementation and consulting firms, global IT service companies, and major enterprises running SAP ERP systems in industries like manufacturing, finance, and retail. Smaller boutique SAP shops do sponsor, but less frequently. Browse Migrate Mate to find SAP ABAP roles specifically filtered to sponsorship-willing employers.
Can I work as an SAP ABAP Consultant on OPT while waiting for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, if your degree is in a STEM-eligible field such as computer science or information systems, you qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of the standard 12 months. That gives you up to three years of work authorization, which covers multiple H-1B lottery cycles and gives employers confidence before committing to a full petition.
Are there cap-exempt options for SAP ABAP Consultants who don't win the H-1B lottery?
Cap-exempt employers, including certain universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research institutions, can file H-1B petitions year-round outside the lottery. SAP ABAP work is less common in those settings, but some large research hospitals and university IT departments run SAP environments and have hired ABAP consultants under cap-exempt status.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Sap Abap Consultant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
