Target companies with existing sponsorship history
Employers who have sponsored visas before move faster and make fewer mistakes. Look for companies that have filed H-1B or L-1A petitions in recent years, they already have immigration counsel and internal processes in place.
Position your international experience as an asset
Regional GM roles often oversee multi-country operations. Framing your cross-border management experience as directly relevant to the role gives employers a business case for sponsorship beyond just filling a headcount gap.
Understand the L-1A pathway if you're transferring internally
If your current employer has U.S. operations, the L-1A intracompany transferee visa may be faster than H-1B. It requires at least one year of managerial or executive experience with the company abroad within the last three years.
Make sure your degree field aligns with the role
H-1B sponsorship for general management roles requires demonstrating specialty occupation status. A degree in business administration, management, finance, or a related field strengthens your petition considerably compared to unrelated disciplines.
Raise sponsorship after demonstrating your value
Bring up visa sponsorship after the employer has expressed genuine interest, ideally after a second or third-round interview. Raising it too early before they're invested in you as a candidate increases the chance of a quick rejection.
Browse sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles where employers are open to visa sponsorship. Focusing your search there saves time and avoids the common frustration of discovering sponsorship limitations late in the process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Regional General Manager role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, but it requires careful framing. H-1B visa classification requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field, like business administration, operations management, or finance, must be a standard requirement for the role. Broadly defined GM positions where any degree satisfies the requirement can face USCIS scrutiny, so the job description and employer documentation need to be precise.
Is the L-1A visa a better option than H-1B for Regional General Managers?
For candidates already working for a multinational employer, the L-1A is often the stronger path. It's not subject to the annual H-1B lottery, has no cap, and is specifically designed for managers and executives transferring to a U.S. office. You need at least one year of qualifying managerial experience with the same company abroad within the past three years. The trade-off is that it only applies to intracompany transfers.
What degree do I need to get sponsored as a Regional General Manager?
A bachelor's degree in business administration, management, finance, economics, or a closely related field is the standard baseline for H-1B eligibility. Some employers also accept degrees in industry-specific disciplines, for example, a Regional GM overseeing healthcare operations may qualify with a healthcare management or public health degree. What matters is that the degree field has a logical, direct connection to the duties of the specific role.
How likely is it that employers will sponsor a Regional General Manager from outside the U.S.?
Likelihood varies significantly by industry and company size. Large corporations in retail, logistics, manufacturing, and hospitality routinely sponsor Regional GM roles because the talent pool is competitive globally. Smaller companies are less likely to sponsor due to legal costs and administrative complexity. Focusing your search on companies with established sponsorship programs, like those listed on Migrate Mate, improves your odds considerably compared to cold applications.
Can I be sponsored as a Regional General Manager if I'm currently on OPT or a student visa?
Yes, though timing matters. If you're on OPT, your employer would need to file your H-1B petition before your OPT expires and ideally before the April 1 filing window. Regional GM roles held by recent graduates are less common, so you'll need to demonstrate that your experience, including internships or prior work, genuinely supports a senior management classification. STEM OPT extension can provide additional runway if your degree qualifies.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Regional General Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
