Prioritize large hospital systems and cancer centers
Academic medical centers and NCI-designated cancer centers sponsor Nurse Navigators most consistently. Their dedicated HR and immigration teams handle petitions more efficiently than smaller community hospitals, which often lack the infrastructure to manage visa sponsorship.
Get your RN license verified through CGFNS early
International nurses must have their credentials evaluated by CGFNS or a state-approved equivalent before applying for a U.S. RN license. This process takes three to six months, so starting before you have a job offer significantly shortens your overall timeline.
Confirm your BSN is treated as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree
Some employers require a credential evaluation confirming your nursing degree meets U.S. BSN standards. A foreign credential evaluation from an NACES-approved organization resolves this upfront and prevents delays during the H-1B petition or EB-3 PERM process.
Target employers with active EB-3 PERM programs
EB-3 sponsorship is common in nursing because of documented shortages. Ask recruiters directly whether the organization has sponsored EB-3 petitions before and whether they work with an immigration attorney, not just an HR generalist handling paperwork.
Highlight care coordination and patient outcome metrics in your application
Nurse Navigator roles are specialty-occupation eligible under H-1B because they require clinical judgment beyond general nursing. Quantifying your impact on readmission rates or patient throughput strengthens both the job offer and the specialty occupation argument in the petition.
Ask about concurrent status maintenance if you are already in the U.S.
If you hold OPT, TN, or another nonimmigrant status, confirm whether the employer will file the H-1B cap-subject petition before your current status expires. Gaps in authorization can force you to leave the U.S. before the petition is adjudicated.

Find Nurse Navigator JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Nurse Navigator roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. Nurse Navigator positions qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B because they require a BSN or higher and apply clinical and systems knowledge beyond the scope of a general RN role. Employers filing the petition must document the degree requirement in the job description, and the position must involve care coordination responsibilities tied specifically to that clinical training.
Is EB-3 a realistic path for Nurse Navigators, and how long does it take?
EB-3 is the most common permanent residency path for nurses and is realistic for Nurse Navigators given documented U.S. nursing shortages. The PERM labor market test typically takes six to twelve months, followed by I-140 adjudication. Final green card timing depends heavily on your country of birth, with Indian and Chinese nationals facing multi-year backlogs while most others wait one to three years total.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor a Nurse Navigator visa?
Large hospital networks, NCI-designated cancer centers, and integrated health systems such as those affiliated with major academic medical schools sponsor Nurse Navigator roles most reliably. These organizations have established immigration counsel and prior sponsorship history. You can browse currently sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate, where listings are filtered specifically for visa-sponsoring positions in nursing and care coordination.
Will my nursing degree from outside the U.S. satisfy the BSN requirement for H-1B?
It can, but you need a foreign credential evaluation from an NACES-approved organization confirming your degree is equivalent to a U.S. BSN. Three-year nursing degrees from some countries may not meet the threshold without additional coursework or experience. USCIS reviews the evaluation during the H-1B petition, so a weak evaluation can result in a Request for Evidence that delays your start date significantly.
Can I work as a Nurse Navigator on OPT or STEM OPT before H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, if you completed a qualifying U.S. nursing or health sciences degree, OPT allows you to work for up to 12 months after graduation. Nurse navigation does not typically fall under STEM OPT extension eligibility unless your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as health informatics. Your employer would need to file an H-1B petition during the April cap season for a October 1 start date.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Nurse Navigator jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
