How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Dental Assistant
Target roles requiring specialized certification
Focus on positions requiring radiography certification, expanded function dental assisting (EFDA), or dental hygiene assistant roles. These specialized functions are more likely to meet H-1B specialty occupation requirements than basic dental assisting.
Highlight formal education and training programs
Emphasize completion of accredited dental assisting programs, associate degrees, or specialized certifications. Document any formal education that goes beyond typical on-the-job training to strengthen your specialty occupation case.
Consider larger dental practices and corporate chains
Multi-location dental practices, corporate dental chains, and specialty clinics are more likely to sponsor visas due to higher revenue and established HR processes for immigration compliance.
Explore specialty dental fields
Target orthodontic, oral surgery, periodontal, or pediatric dental practices. Specialized dental fields often require additional training and certification, making the role more likely to qualify for H-1B sponsorship.
Document any practice management responsibilities
If your role includes scheduling software, insurance processing, patient records management, or administrative duties requiring specialized knowledge, emphasize these functions to strengthen the specialty occupation argument for sponsorship.
Network through dental professional associations
Join the American Dental Assistants Association or state dental associations. Many sponsors find international candidates through professional networks rather than general job boards, especially for specialized positions.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do dental assistants qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Most entry-level dental assistant positions don't qualify for H-1B sponsorship because they don't meet the specialty occupation requirement. However, roles requiring specialized certification like radiography, expanded function duties, or formal dental assisting program completion have better prospects for visa sponsorship.
What degree do I need for dental assistant visa sponsorship?
While many dental assistant jobs only require on-the-job training, sponsored positions typically need completion of an accredited dental assisting program, associate degree, or specialized certifications like radiography or expanded function dental assisting (EFDA) to meet H-1B specialty occupation requirements.
What type of dental practices sponsor visas?
Larger dental practices, corporate chains, specialty clinics (orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics), and academic dental centers are most likely to sponsor visas. These employers have higher revenue and established processes for immigration compliance compared to small family dental practices.
Can dental assistants apply for other work visas?
Dental assistants from Australia can use the E-3 visa with a relevant degree and specialty occupation role. TN visa eligibility is limited since dental assisting isn't specifically listed. O-1 visas are extremely rare unless you have extraordinary achievements in dental education or research.
What makes a dental assistant role more likely to get sponsored?
Roles with expanded responsibilities beyond basic assisting have better sponsorship prospects. This includes radiography certification, patient education duties, practice management functions, specialized equipment operation, or positions requiring formal dental assisting program completion rather than just on-the-job training.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Dental Assistant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
