How to Get Visa Sponsorship in OB/GYN
Target academic medical centers first
University hospitals and teaching facilities regularly sponsor international physicians. They have established immigration processes and often prefer candidates with research experience or fellowship training.
Consider J-1 waiver opportunities
Many states offer J-1 waiver programs for OB/GYNs willing to work in underserved areas. This provides a direct path to permanent residency.
Highlight subspecialty training
Fellowship training in maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, or reproductive endocrinology makes you more attractive to sponsors due to specialized skill shortages.
Apply during residency's final year
Start the sponsorship process early. H-1B applications filed in March take effect in October, so timing matters for post-residency employment transitions.
Focus on rural and critical access hospitals
Smaller hospitals in underserved areas face physician shortages and are more willing to sponsor. They often have streamlined immigration processes for essential specialties.
Network through professional organizations
Join ACOG and attend conferences. Many sponsoring employers recruit directly through professional networks rather than posting positions publicly on job boards.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do I need USMLE scores for OB/GYN visa sponsorship?
Yes, most employers require USMLE Step 1, 2 CK, and 2 CS scores, plus ECFMG certification. Some positions may accept COMLEX if you're a DO graduate. Board certification or eligibility in obstetrics and gynecology is typically required for attending positions.
Can international medical graduates get H-1B sponsorship for OB/GYN roles?
Yes, hospitals and health systems regularly sponsor IMGs for OB/GYN positions. You'll need completed residency training, board eligibility, and state medical licensure. Academic medical centers and rural hospitals are the most common sponsors for this specialty.
What's the difference between J-1 and H-1B for OB/GYN physicians?
J-1 requires returning to your home country for two years unless you get a waiver. H-1B allows dual intent and direct green card applications. Many OB/GYNs use J-1 waiver programs in underserved areas as a pathway to permanent residency while fulfilling service commitments.
Do OB/GYN positions qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B?
Yes, physician positions clearly meet the specialty occupation requirement since they require medical school completion, residency training, and state licensure. The medical degree requirement is well-established, making OB/GYN roles straightforward for H-1B approval.
How long does visa sponsorship take for OB/GYN jobs?
H-1B processing takes 2-4 months without premium processing, 1-2 weeks with premium processing. J-1 waiver applications can take 6-12 months. Start the process 6-8 months before your intended start date to account for credentialing and state licensing requirements.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored OB/GYN jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
