How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Orthodontist Assistant
Target specialized orthodontic practices
Large orthodontic practices and dental service organizations are more likely to sponsor visas than small offices. They have HR infrastructure and experience with immigration processes for specialized dental roles.
Highlight dental technology certifications
Certifications in digital imaging, 3D orthodontics, or dental software demonstrate specialized skills. These technical qualifications help establish the role as requiring specialized knowledge for H-1B eligibility.
Research degree requirement consistency
Some orthodontist assistant positions require only a high school diploma plus training, which may not qualify for H-1B. Target roles specifically requiring bachelor's degrees in health sciences or related fields.
Consider dental hygienist pathway
Licensed dental hygienists working in orthodontic settings have stronger H-1B cases due to degree requirements and professional licensing. The role involves more complex responsibilities than basic orthodontist assistant positions.
Focus on clinical coordination roles
Orthodontist assistants in treatment planning, patient education, or clinical coordination roles are more likely to qualify for sponsorship than those performing primarily administrative or basic chairside assistance tasks.
Apply through healthcare staffing agencies
Medical staffing companies often sponsor healthcare professionals for multiple client assignments. They're experienced with visa processes and may have established relationships with orthodontic practices needing specialized staff.

Do orthodontist assistants qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Orthodontist assistants can qualify for H-1B sponsorship if the position requires a bachelor's degree and involves specialized duties. Entry-level chairside assistant roles typically don't qualify, but positions requiring degrees in dental hygiene, health sciences, or involving clinical coordination, treatment planning, or advanced orthodontic technology often do. The employer must demonstrate the role requires specialized knowledge.
What degree do I need for orthodontist assistant H-1B sponsorship?
Most successful H-1B cases for orthodontist assistants require a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene, health sciences, biology, or a related field. Some positions may accept associate degrees in dental hygiene plus relevant experience. Certificate programs alone typically don't meet H-1B specialty occupation requirements unless combined with a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
What types of employers sponsor orthodontist assistants?
Large orthodontic practices, dental service organizations, academic medical centers with orthodontic programs, and specialized pediatric dental practices are most likely to sponsor. Multi-location practices often have dedicated HR teams familiar with visa processes. Healthcare staffing agencies also sponsor orthodontist assistants for placement with multiple client practices.
Are orthodontist assistant H-1B approvals common?
H-1B approvals for orthodontist assistants are less common than for licensed dental hygienists but possible for specialized roles. Success depends on demonstrating the position requires a bachelor's degree and specialized knowledge. Roles involving digital orthodontics, treatment planning, patient education, or clinical coordination have stronger approval chances than basic chairside assistance.
Can I get an E-3 visa as an orthodontist assistant if I'm Australian?
Australian citizens can potentially qualify for E-3 visas as orthodontist assistants if the role meets specialty occupation requirements. The position must require a bachelor's degree and the duties must be sufficiently complex. Licensed dental hygienists working in orthodontic settings have stronger cases than general orthodontist assistants due to degree requirements and professional licensing standards.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Orthodontist Assistant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
