Adolescent Psychotherapist: Individual, Group, and Programming @ Sankofa – LCSW Lvl 1
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Licensed Clinical Social Worker to be part of the Rush University Medical Center’s Social Work and Community Health (SWaCH) Department at the Rush West Side Mental Health Center!
What are some of the core values of the Social Work and Community Health Psychotherapy Team?
- Patient-centered: We build therapeutic relationships grounded in trust, mutuality, and respect. We collaboratively identify therapeutic goals that are meaningful for our patients and develop a plan to best achieve those goals.
- Strengths-based: The strengths of our patients, families, and communities at the center of the healing process.
- Collaborative: We provide mental health services within the context of a large academic medical center and our community. To the extent that it is beneficial and empowering to our patients, we advocate for our patients and collaborate with other providers to make sure that the process of seeking care is as clear and empowering as possible.

By realizing the widespread and pervasive impact of trauma and potential paths to recovery, we are able to recognize signs and symptoms of trauma, integrate knowledge of trauma into our policies and practices, and seek to resist re-traumatization.

Job Summary:
This position in the Social Work and Community Health (SWaCH) Department is based in West Garfield Park and will staff the Rush West Side Mental Health Center, an extension of the existing SWaCH Psychotherapy Clinic located just east in the Illinois Medical District. How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Psychotherapist
Target healthcare systems and community mental health centers
Large hospital networks like Kaiser Permanente, Cleveland Clinic, and state mental health departments regularly sponsor H-1B visas for licensed therapists to fill critical staffing needs.
Emphasize your clinical specializations and training
Highlight specialized training in trauma therapy, DBT, CBT, or addiction counseling. Employers value specific expertise that's harder to find domestically, strengthening your sponsorship case.
Research state licensing requirements early
Each state has different licensing requirements for psychotherapists. Some accept international degrees with additional coursework, while others require full re-credentialing through approved programs before employment.
Consider telehealth-enabled positions
Many employers now offer hybrid roles combining in-person and telehealth services. These positions often have more flexible geographic requirements and may increase your sponsorship opportunities.
Apply for positions requiring bilingual or multicultural expertise
Therapists who speak multiple languages or have cultural competency with specific populations face less competition and are more likely to receive sponsorship from diverse healthcare organizations.
Network with university counseling centers and teaching hospitals
Academic medical centers and university counseling services are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning no lottery system. They can hire qualified therapists year-round without numerical limitations.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do psychotherapist positions qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, psychotherapist roles qualify as specialty occupations requiring a master's degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or related field. The role must demonstrate that a specific degree is required, not just preferred, for the position to meet H-1B standards.
Can international psychology degrees qualify for U.S. psychotherapist licensing?
It depends on your degree and target state. Most states require degrees from CACREP-accredited programs or equivalent. You may need credential evaluation through organizations like WES, plus additional coursework to meet specific state licensing requirements before practicing.
What types of employers sponsor psychotherapists for work visas?
Healthcare systems, community mental health centers, university counseling centers, VA hospitals, and large private practice groups commonly sponsor therapists. Academic medical centers are particularly attractive because they're cap-exempt H-1B employers with no lottery restrictions.
Do I need U.S. clinical hours for visa sponsorship?
Not for visa approval, but for state licensing. Many employers sponsor candidates who can demonstrate equivalent international clinical experience, then support the licensing process. Some positions offer supervised clinical hours as part of the employment arrangement.
How does state licensing affect H-1B approval for psychotherapists?
USCIS doesn't require state licensing at the time of H-1B filing, but the employer must demonstrate you're qualified to obtain licensing. The job offer should include provisions for completing licensing requirements within a reasonable timeframe after approval.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Psychotherapist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
