Do vascular surgeons qualify for H-1B visas?
Yes, vascular surgeons easily qualify for H-1B visas as the position requires specialized medical knowledge and training that clearly meets specialty occupation criteria. Your medical degree, residency, and vascular surgery fellowship demonstrate the advanced education required. Most hospital petitions for surgeon positions have high approval rates due to the clear professional requirements.
Can foreign-trained vascular surgeons get U.S. visa sponsorship?
Yes, but you'll need ECFMG certification and must complete USMLE exams to practice in the U.S. Many employers sponsor international medical graduates who have completed U.S. residency and fellowship programs. Some positions may require additional credentialing through state medical boards before visa filing can begin.
What visa options work best for vascular surgeons?
H-1B is most common for employed positions, while O-1 works for surgeons with extraordinary achievements like significant research or leadership roles. EB-2 NIW offers a direct path to permanent residency for surgeons working in underserved areas or conducting important medical research. J-1 waiver programs provide another permanent residency route.
Do I need a specific medical degree for surgeon visa sponsorship?
You need an MD or equivalent foreign medical degree, plus completion of an accredited vascular surgery residency and fellowship. ECFMG certification is required for foreign medical graduates. Some employers may prefer or require board certification from the American Board of Vascular Surgery, though this can sometimes be obtained after hiring.
How long does visa processing take for vascular surgeon positions?
H-1B processing typically takes 2-4 months, or 15 days with premium processing. O-1 petitions usually process within 2-3 months. EB-2 NIW applications can take 8-18 months for the initial petition, plus additional time for adjustment of status or consular processing. Hospital employers often assist with expedited processing when possible.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Vascular Surgeon jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
