Target healthcare systems, not just clinics
Large hospital networks and rehabilitation systems like Kaiser, HCA, and academic medical centers have established immigration programs and legal teams. They sponsor SLPs far more reliably than small private practices or outpatient clinics with no prior sponsorship history.
Get your state license sorted early
Every state requires a separate SLP license, and processing can take two to four months. Start the application immediately after accepting an offer. Employers cannot submit your visa petition until you hold a valid license in the state where you'll work.
Verify your ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence
Most sponsoring employers require CCC-SLP certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. It signals clinical readiness and satisfies credentialing requirements at hospitals. Without it, some employers will delay sponsorship until you complete the fellowship year.
School districts are an underrated sponsorship path
Public school systems face severe SLP shortages and frequently sponsor international candidates through H-1B and occasionally TN visas for Canadians. District HR departments often have immigration attorneys on retainer, making the process more straightforward than it might appear.
Frame your specialty clearly in the offer letter
SLPs with subspecialties in dysphagia, AAC, voice disorders, or pediatric feeding strengthen the visa petition. A job offer letter that specifies the clinical focus area helps the employer's attorney build a cleaner specialty occupation argument with USCIS.
Ask about cap-exempt employer options
Nonprofit hospitals, university medical centers, and government-affiliated research institutions are exempt from the H-1B lottery. Positions at these employers can be filed any time of year, giving you a direct path to H-1B status without waiting for the April registration window.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does speech-language pathology qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, consistently. SLP roles require at minimum a master's degree in communication sciences and disorders, which satisfies USCIS's core specialty occupation criterion. USCIS has a strong approval history for SLP petitions across clinical, hospital, and school settings. Because every state licensure body mandates the same degree, employers rarely face a request for evidence challenging the specialty occupation classification.
Which visa types do employers use to sponsor speech-language pathologists?
H-1B visa is the most common pathway, covering both cap-subject and cap-exempt employers. Canadian SLPs can use the TN visa under the USMCA, which is faster and avoids the lottery entirely. Employers willing to sponsor permanent residence typically file under EB-3, which covers skilled workers in healthcare. Some hospital systems combine H-1B visa sponsorship with a concurrent EB-3 filing to start the green card clock early. Browse current openings on Migrate Mate to see which employers are actively sponsoring.
Do I need ASHA certification to get sponsored, or is a master's degree enough?
A master's degree is the legal minimum for H-1B classification, but most healthcare employers require CCC-SLP certification as a credentialing condition of employment. If you're still completing your Clinical Fellowship Year, some employers will hire you provisionally and file the petition before CCC-SLP is awarded, provided you're licensed in the state. School districts may be more flexible on CCC-SLP timing than hospital systems.
How competitive is H-1B sponsorship for SLPs compared to other healthcare roles?
SLPs are in a strong position relative to many other healthcare professions. The U.S. faces a well-documented SLP shortage, particularly in schools and rural healthcare settings, which means employers are motivated to sponsor. Cap-exempt institutions, including nonprofit hospitals and university systems, can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery exposure, which significantly improves the odds compared to cap-subject filings in industries like tech.
Can international SLPs work in public schools on a work visa?
Yes, and school districts are one of the most active sponsors for SLPs. Public school systems qualify as government entities, which generally makes them cap-exempt for H-1B purposes, meaning no lottery and no April registration deadline. Districts typically partner with immigration attorneys who handle these filings regularly. State licensure and sometimes a school services credential are required in addition to CCC-SLP, so requirements vary by state.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Speech Language Pathology jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
