Responsible for developing and maintaining a quality improvement program for the Loma Linda University Cancer Center Cancer Registry. Performs abstracting and case finding for required data elements following a combination of federal, professional and state mandates. These include standards set by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, California Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) – Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result Program (SEER). Key regulatory and coding manuals dictating abstraction include American College of Surgeons Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE) manual, SEER Program Coding and Staging Manuals, AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, International Classification of Disease for Oncology, Solid Tumor Rules, and State/Regional Central Registry Mandates. Performs other duties as needed.
Education and Experience: Associate's Degree preferred. Minimum two years of experience in a hospital or central tumor registry required. Minimum five years of experience in a medical office or facility preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and pathology. Able to read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access). Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate and accept direction. Maintains a courteous and cooperative attitude toward staff, interdepartmental staff, external agencies, physician offices, reporting facilities, convalescent homes and public. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; be able to analyze, interpret data and be able to act on the analysis. Self-motivated and able to work independently without direct supervision. Able to distinguish colors as necessary; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone, and identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace; see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to the position.
Licensures and Certifications: Valid Drivers License required. Eligibility to obtain Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification required, with certification obtained within two years of hire date.
