Document your technical certifications
CISSP, CISM, or vendor-specific certifications like AWS Security Specialty strengthen your petition by demonstrating specialized expertise. USCIS weighs credentials heavily for sales engineering roles where the technical complexity of the job is central to approval.
Get your degree equivalency confirmed early
If your bachelor's degree is in a non-technical field, a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service can establish equivalency. Australian three-year degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 purposes.
Ask employers about cap-exempt sponsorship options
Some cybersecurity firms contract with universities or nonprofit research institutions, making them cap-exempt H-1B employers. If you missed the H-1B lottery, a cap-exempt employer lets you file anytime without waiting for the next registration window.
Prepare a clear narrative linking your degree to the role
USCIS scrutinizes sales engineering roles because they blend business and technical functions. A strong petition explains specifically how your technical degree underpins the security architecture work, not just the client-facing sales component.
Browse sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate before applying broadly
Not every company that posts Security Sales Engineer roles will sponsor visas. Filtering for confirmed sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate before investing in applications saves significant time and focuses your outreach on realistic opportunities.

Find Security Sales Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Security Sales Engineer role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, Security Sales Engineer qualifies as an H-1B specialty occupation because the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information security, engineering, or a closely related technical field. The key is that the petition must clearly establish the theoretical and practical application of that specialized knowledge, rather than framing the role primarily as a sales position.
What degree field do I need to qualify for visa sponsorship as a Security Sales Engineer?
Computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, or cybersecurity are the strongest degree matches. Some employers have successfully sponsored candidates with degrees in mathematics or physics when paired with substantial technical work history. A degree in business or marketing alone is unlikely to satisfy USCIS specialty occupation requirements unless supplemented by significant technical credentials and a detailed employer justification.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my chances as a Security Sales Engineer?
You enter the same lottery as all other H-1B applicants, with roughly a 25% selection rate in recent years based on USCIS registration data. If you hold a U.S. master's degree, you get two chances through the advanced degree exemption pool. Australians can bypass the lottery entirely with the E-3 visa, which has a 10,500 annual cap that has never been fully utilized.
Will employers actually sponsor a Security Sales Engineer on a visa, or is sponsorship rare?
Sponsorship is common among enterprise cybersecurity vendors and large technology companies. Security Sales Engineers are consistently in demand, and employers in this space are accustomed to competing globally for technical talent. The challenge is identifying which specific employers sponsor visas for this role. Migrate Mate filters job listings by confirmed sponsoring employers, so you can focus applications where sponsorship is already on the table.
Can I get an E-3 visa as an Australian for a Security Sales Engineer role?
Yes, Security Sales Engineer is a strong candidate for E-3 classification as a specialty occupation. Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor, and you attend a consular interview in Australia with your job offer and supporting documents. Unlike the H-1B, there is no lottery and no employer petition filed with USCIS, which makes the E-3 significantly faster to obtain for eligible Australians.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Security Sales Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
