Target architecture and engineering firms
Large architectural firms and engineering consultancies frequently sponsor H-1B visas for technical writers who understand complex building systems and can translate engineering concepts into clear specifications.
Highlight construction technology knowledge
Emphasize experience with BIM software, CAD systems, and construction management platforms. Technical proficiency in industry-standard tools strengthens your case for specialty occupation classification under immigration law.
Consider federal contracting opportunities
Government contractors working on infrastructure projects often need specifications writers and may be more familiar with visa sponsorship processes due to their experience hiring international talent.
Document your technical writing portfolio
Prepare samples of construction specifications, technical manuals, and project documentation. Immigration officers need to see that your role requires specialized knowledge beyond general writing skills.
Apply to companies with ongoing projects
Firms with major construction or infrastructure projects have stronger business justification for H-1B petitions. Research companies with multi-year contracts or significant project backlogs when targeting employers.
Network through industry associations
Join Construction Specifications Institute chapters and attend industry conferences. Many specifications writing positions are filled through professional networks rather than public job postings, especially at smaller firms.

Find Specifications Writer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do specifications writers qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, specifications writers typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related technical field. The role must involve specialized knowledge of building codes, materials science, and construction methodologies rather than general writing skills.
What degree requirements do employers typically set for sponsored positions?
Most employers require a bachelor's degree in architecture, civil engineering, construction management, or a closely related field. Some positions may accept technical degrees in mechanical or electrical engineering with construction industry experience. Pure English or communications degrees typically don't qualify unless combined with extensive technical construction background.
Which types of companies are most likely to sponsor specifications writers?
Large architectural firms, engineering consultancies, and construction companies with complex projects frequently sponsor H-1B visas. Federal contractors working on infrastructure projects and firms involved in healthcare, educational, or commercial construction often have established sponsorship processes and ongoing need for technical documentation specialists.
How do I demonstrate specialty occupation requirements for this role?
Focus on technical aspects like knowledge of building codes, materials specifications, construction sequencing, and industry software like Revit or AutoCAD. Prepare portfolio samples showing complex technical specifications rather than general marketing materials. Emphasize how the role requires engineering or architectural knowledge beyond basic writing skills.
How to find Specifications Writer jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Specifications Writer jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international candidates with sponsoring employers. Focus on construction companies, engineering firms, and architectural consultancies that frequently hire Specifications Writers and sponsor H-1B, TN, or other work visas. These employers often need technical writing expertise for project documentation and regulatory compliance.
Are there alternative visa options for international specifications writers?
Australians can use the E-3 visa, which has no annual cap and faster processing. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify for TN status under the Technical Publications Writer category if they meet education requirements. The O-1 visa is possible for writers with extraordinary ability demonstrated through industry recognition or specialized expertise in construction technology.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Specifications Writer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
