Target companies with active H-1B filing histories
Large tech, semiconductor, and automotive firms file H-1B petitions for Test Engineering Managers regularly. Focusing on companies with established immigration programs significantly reduces the risk of a sponsorship conversation going nowhere.
Clarify your degree field early in the process
USCIS requires your degree to align with test engineering. A background in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field will satisfy the specialty occupation requirement. Unrelated degrees can complicate the petition and delay approval.
Understand the difference between H-1B and L-1 sponsorship
Some employers prefer sponsoring managers through the L-1A intracompany transferee route if you already work for the company abroad. This bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely and can be faster for managerial roles with international presence.
Lead with your team size and technical scope on your resume
USCIS scrutinizes manager titles without clear technical depth. Quantifying direct reports, test infrastructure owned, and engineering outcomes demonstrates the specialized complexity the specialty occupation standard requires for this role.
Ask about premium processing before accepting an offer
Premium processing reduces USCIS adjudication to 15 business days for an added fee paid by the employer. For a manager role with a start date tied to a product cycle, confirming this option upfront avoids costly scheduling conflicts.
Australian citizens should ask about the E-3 visa
The E-3 visa offers Australian nationals an H-1B alternative with no lottery and a much faster approval timeline. Test Engineering Manager roles qualify as specialty occupations, making this a practical and underused sponsorship path for eligible candidates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Test Engineering Manager considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Test Engineering Manager meets the H-1B visa specialty occupation standard because the role typically requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related technical discipline. USCIS looks at whether the position is complex enough that a degree in a specific field is a normal hiring requirement. Most employers in hardware, software, and semiconductor companies document this clearly in the petition.
What degree do I need for a company to sponsor my H-1B as a Test Engineering Manager?
A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a closely related field is the standard requirement. Some employers accept software engineering or systems engineering degrees if the role involves software-defined test infrastructure. A degree in an unrelated discipline, such as business or humanities, will not satisfy the specialty occupation requirement without significant compensating work experience documented through an equivalency evaluation.
How likely is H-1B approval for a Test Engineering Manager role?
Approval rates for Test Engineering Manager petitions are generally strong when the employer documents the technical complexity of the role clearly. The main risks are an RFE questioning whether the position requires a specific degree rather than a general one, or whether the managerial duties overshadow the technical specialization. Employers with experienced immigration counsel and clear job duty descriptions tend to see fewer challenges at adjudication.
Can I find Test Engineering Manager jobs that sponsor H-1B visas on Migrate Mate?
Yes. Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface jobs from employers willing to sponsor work visas, including H-1B petitions for engineering and technical management roles. Every listing is filtered for sponsorship relevance, so you're not sifting through postings that exclude visa holders. It's the most direct way to find Test Engineering Manager openings where sponsorship is already on the table.
Does the H-1B lottery affect my chances of getting sponsored as a Test Engineering Manager?
It does if you're applying for a standard cap-subject H-1B. USCIS conducts an annual lottery in March for the roughly 85,000 available slots, and selection is not guaranteed regardless of qualifications. However, if a prospective employer is a university, nonprofit research organization, or government entity, those positions are cap-exempt and skip the lottery entirely. Australians in this role may also be eligible for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Test Engineering Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
