Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a vocational rehabilitation counselor in New Jersey?
You begin by earning a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling or a related field, then pursue licensure through the New Jersey State Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners, which oversees Licensed Professional Counselor credentials. Many New Jersey employers also require or strongly prefer the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor national credential, awarded by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification after passing a national exam. State agency positions with the New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services typically require both the degree and the CRC.
Which companies hire vocational rehabilitation counselors in New Jersey?
Companies currently hiring vocational rehabilitation counselors in New Jersey include Coastal Home Rehabilitation, Town Physical Therapy, and Valley Health System (New Jersey), per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. State agencies, nonprofit disability service providers, and hospital-based rehabilitation programs represent the most consistent source of full-time openings across New Jersey.
Which New Jersey cities have the most vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs?
Paramus, Wayne, and Middletown account for the most vocational rehabilitation counselor openings in New Jersey. Newark drives volume through its concentration of nonprofit disability organizations and large hospital systems, Trenton draws openings from state government agencies including the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, and Camden benefits from the anchor presence of Virtua Health and county-run social services that maintain ongoing counselor needs.
Are there remote vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they are limited because the role regularly requires in-person client assessments, job site visits, and coordination with employers on behalf of clients. About 0% of vocational rehabilitation counselor openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most positions. The parts of the work most amenable to remote delivery include intake interviews, case documentation, and telehealth counseling sessions for clients with stable community placements.
How can I get hired as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a supervised practicum or internship through a CACREP-accredited New Jersey program, such as those offered at Seton Hall University or Kean University, which place students directly with state and nonprofit rehabilitation agencies. The New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services hires rehabilitation technicians and case aides as entry-level roles that build toward full counselor positions. Adjacent roles like job coach, benefits counselor, or disability case manager at Easterseals New Jersey or county boards of social services are common lateral moves that open counselor tracks for candidates still pursuing their master's.
Where can I find and apply to vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in New Jersey?
You can find and apply to vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in New Jersey on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find the roles that match your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
