Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Pennsylvania?
Most Pennsylvania employers require a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, counseling, or a closely related field, along with the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor credential issued by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. Pennsylvania does not issue its own separate state license for this role, so the CRC functions as the primary professional credential recognized by state agencies and nonprofit employers alike. Candidates pursuing positions with the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation must also meet that agency's civil service classification requirements.
Which companies hire vocational rehabilitation counselors in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania vocational rehabilitation counselor roles are posted by WellSpan Health, Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital, and Aramark and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Pennsylvania's combination of a large state agency network, major academic medical centers, and a dense nonprofit disability-services sector means consistent demand outside of any single employer.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs?
Philadelphia, Bethlehem, and York carry the highest concentration of vocational rehabilitation counselor openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia's depth of hospital systems, behavioral health networks, and disability nonprofits drives volume there, Pittsburgh's medical corridor anchored by UPMC supports strong demand in the west, and Harrisburg's role as the state capital puts the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation's central operations close by.
Are there remote vocational rehabilitation counselor jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're limited, because the role typically involves in-person client assessments, job site visits, and coordination with Pennsylvania agency offices. About 0% of vocational rehabilitation counselor openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting a modest but real shift since telehealth-enabled intake and counseling sessions became more accepted. The administrative and case-coordination portions of the role are most likely to be performed remotely under hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a rehabilitation counselor trainee or vocational case aide position with the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, which periodically posts entry-level civil service roles that allow candidates to complete supervised hours toward CRC eligibility on the job. Nonprofit providers such as Community Integrated Services and Goodwill Keystone Area also hire assistant counselors and job coaches as lateral entry points. Candidates who hold a completed master's degree in counseling, even without field hours, are competitive for these positions, and any practicum or internship completed at a Pennsylvania OVR district office strengthens an application considerably.
