Accounting Intern Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a accounting intern in New York?
Most accounting intern roles in New York require current enrollment in a bachelor's or master's degree program in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. New York does not require a license to work as an intern, but candidates who have passed one or more sections of the CPA exam administered through the New York State Board of Public Accountancy gain a meaningful edge with public accounting firms and financial institutions recruiting on campus across the state.
How much do accounting interns make in New York?
Accounting interns in New York earn a median of about $102,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,700 for the lowest 10% to over $171,030 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire accounting interns in New York?
Employers hiring accounting interns in New York right now include Bank of China USA, Goldman Sachs, and M&T Bank, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of Big Four firms, regional public accounting practices, and major financial institutions makes it one of the deepest markets in the country for accounting intern placements.
Which New York cities have the most accounting intern jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and Queens have the most accounting intern openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its density of financial services firms, corporate headquarters, and Big Four offices, while Buffalo and Albany generate openings through regional accounting firms, state government agencies, and large healthcare and manufacturing employers that run structured internship programs.
Are there remote accounting intern jobs in New York?
Yes, though they are less common than in purely analytical or software roles since accounting interns often work directly with documents, systems, and teams on site. About 30% of accounting intern openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common at larger corporate employers. Tax preparation support and financial data entry tasks are the functions most likely to be performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a accounting intern in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to structured internship programs at New York's Big Four offices or regional firms like Marcum and EisnerAmper, which recruit students with no prior work experience from New York-area accounting programs. On-campus recruiting at schools including Baruch College, Fordham University, and NYU Stern connects students to first internships, and volunteering for VITA tax assistance sites across New York City builds hands-on credentials that strengthen applications considerably.
Where can I find and apply to accounting intern jobs in New York?
