- Current DEA registration with authority to prescribe Schedule II through V controlled substances

Tips for Your Addiction Psychiatrist Job Search
Highlight board certification prominently
Addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry board certification from ABAM or ABPN is a hard filter for most employers. List it in your resume header and credentials section, not buried in a certifications block at the bottom.
Tailor your DEA schedule for each listing
Many addiction psychiatrist roles require a current DEA registration with Schedule II through V authority for buprenorphine and other controlled substances. Confirm your DEA schedule matches what the posting requires before you apply.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists addiction psychiatrist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Quantify your MAT patient panel experience
Hiring managers want to know the scale and complexity of your medication-assisted treatment caseload. State the average panel size you managed and the specific protocols you used, such as buprenorphine induction or naltrexone maintenance.
Prepare case-based answers about dual diagnosis
Interviewers at integrated behavioral health and hospital-employed roles routinely ask how you handle patients with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders. Walk through your diagnostic reasoning and treatment sequencing with a concrete example.
Negotiate your X-waiver or DATA 2000 history strategically
If you already hold a buprenorphine waiver or have a high-volume prescribing history, that's a direct financial asset to an employer. Bring it up during offer discussions, because it directly reduces onboarding costs and time to billing.
Addiction Psychiatrist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most addiction psychiatrists?
The companies hiring the most addiction psychiatrists right now include Oaklawn Psychiatric Center, HRI Hospital, and Beth Israel Lahey Health, with the largest share of openings in Indiana, Massachusetts, and Alaska, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in integrated health systems, federally qualified health centers, and outpatient substance use disorder treatment programs.
How many addiction psychiatrist jobs are remote?
About 0% of addiction psychiatrist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the expansion of telehealth in behavioral health. Remote roles are most common in outpatient medication-assisted treatment supervision, psychiatric consultation, and case review positions, while inpatient detox and residential program roles remain largely on-site.
How do you become an addiction psychiatrist?
You complete a four-year MD or DO program, followed by a four-year general psychiatry residency, then a one-year addiction psychiatry fellowship accredited by the ACGME. After fellowship, you're eligible to sit for the addiction psychiatry board exam administered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Some physicians pursue addiction medicine certification through the American Board of Addiction Medicine as an alternate path.
Can you get hired as an addiction psychiatrist with little experience?
Yes, many health systems hire addiction psychiatrists directly out of fellowship. Early-career candidates are most competitive at federally qualified health centers, VA facilities, and academic medical centers that have structured onboarding for new attendings. Emphasize your fellowship training volume, specific patient populations you treated, and any buprenorphine prescribing experience, since these signal readiness to carry an independent caseload from day one.
What does the addiction psychiatrist interview process look like?
Most processes begin with a phone or video screen with a recruiter or department chief, followed by a clinical interview that includes case-based questions on diagnosis and treatment planning for substance use disorders. Larger health systems add a half-day or full-day on-site visit with departmental leadership, a tour of clinical facilities, and sometimes a meeting with the credentialing or compliance team. Reference checks and a formal offer typically follow within a few weeks.
Where can I find and apply to addiction psychiatrist jobs?
You can find and apply to addiction psychiatrist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your credentials, location preferences, and practice focus, then apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
