What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in diagnostic radiologist jobs.
- MD or DO degree with completion of an accredited diagnostic radiology residency program
- Active American Board of Radiology certification or documented board eligibility
- State medical licensure in the state where the position is located
- Proficiency reading CT, MRI, ultrasound, and plain film across general and subspecialty cases
- Experience with PACS and RIS platforms used in clinical radiology workflows
- Fellowship training in a subspecialty such as neuroradiology, interventional radiology, or breast imaging
Tips for Your Diagnostic Radiologist Job Search
Tailor your CV to subspecialty demand
Highlight fellowship training and case volume for the subspecialty each position targets. A body imaging fellowship matters far more to a community hospital than a general list of modalities, so restructure your CV for each application rather than sending one version everywhere.
Target teleradiology roles for faster entry
Teleradiology groups hire diagnostic radiologists across experience levels and often post openings outside major job boards. If you're building your attending hours or transitioning from academic to private practice, these roles offer broad modality exposure and flexible scheduling that hospital positions rarely match.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists diagnostic radiologist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Get your board certification current before applying
Most hospital systems and imaging groups require active ABR certification or documented eligibility before extending an offer. Confirm your continuing medical education credits and Maintenance of Certification status are current so credentialing doesn't stall your start date after an offer is made.
Prepare case reads for technical interviews
Many practices include a read session with the hiring team, not just a panel conversation. Refresh your approach to dictating findings clearly and efficiently under observation, and be ready to walk through differential diagnoses on plain film, CT, and MRI cases relevant to the group's patient mix.
Negotiate call burden and RVU structure separately
Base compensation tells only part of the story in diagnostic radiology. Ask specifically about on-call frequency, overnight teleradiology obligations, and how RVU thresholds affect your bonus pool before accepting an offer, since these factors vary widely between academic, hospital-employed, and private group positions.
Diagnostic Radiologist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most diagnostic radiologists?
The companies hiring the most diagnostic radiologists right now include Spectrum Healthcare Partners, Baylor Scott & White Health, and Optum, with the largest share of openings in New York, Maine, and Virginia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Teleradiology companies and large hospital systems consistently account for a significant portion of active postings.
How many diagnostic radiologist jobs are remote?
About 26% of diagnostic radiologist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote roles concentrated in teleradiology and nighthawk reading positions. Subspecialties such as general diagnostic reads, mammography interpretation, and preliminary overnight reads are the most commonly offered in fully remote formats, while interventional work remains predominantly on-site.
How do you become a diagnostic radiologist?
You complete medical school to earn an MD or DO, then match into a diagnostic radiology residency accredited by the ACGME, which runs four years after an internship year. Following residency, many radiologists pursue a one- to two-year fellowship in a subspecialty. You then pass the American Board of Radiology qualifying and certifying exams and obtain state licensure before beginning independent practice.
Can you get hired as a diagnostic radiologist with little experience?
Yes, but the realistic entry point is a position that aligns with your fellowship or residency training rather than a senior-level subspecialty role. Teleradiology groups and community hospitals often hire new attendings directly out of residency, especially in general diagnostic radiology. Highlighting case volume, modality breadth, and any quality improvement or research work from training strengthens an application when attending experience is limited.
What does the diagnostic radiologist interview process look like?
Most practices start with a phone or video screening with a physician recruiter or department chair, followed by an on-site visit that includes tours of reading rooms, meetings with current staff radiologists, and a conversation with hospital or group leadership. Many hiring groups also include a live or recorded case read session to evaluate interpretation speed, dictation clarity, and clinical reasoning before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to diagnostic radiologist jobs?
You can find and apply to diagnostic radiologist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your subspecialty, preferred setting, and location, then apply directly to each position that fits.
