How do you become a attorney in Maine?
To become a licensed attorney in Maine, you must graduate from an ABA-accredited law school, pass the Uniform Bar Examination administered in Maine, and satisfy the character and fitness review conducted by the Maine Board of Bar Examiners. After passing, you apply for admission through the Maine Board of Bar Overseers. Attorneys licensed in other states may also seek admission by motion if they meet Maine's experience requirements.
How much do attorneys make in Maine?
Attorneys in Maine earn a median of about $113,120 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,820 for the lowest 10% to over $215,610 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire attorneys in Maine?
Companies currently hiring attorneys in Maine include Epic, Tyler Technologies, and Jobot, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's legal market also draws sustained hiring from state agencies, regional law firms, and major healthcare and insurance organizations headquartered in the state.
Which Maine cities have the most attorney jobs?
The Maine cities with the most attorney openings are Portland, Auburn, and Bangor. Portland anchors demand as the state's commercial and legal hub, home to the largest concentration of private firms and corporate legal departments, while Augusta generates consistent openings through state government agencies and the legislature, and Bangor serves as the primary legal center for northern and eastern Maine.
Are there remote attorney jobs in Maine?
Yes, and more than many fields. About 14% of attorney openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based nature of much legal work. Transactional roles, in-house compliance counsel positions, and legal research roles tend to offer the most flexibility, while litigation-focused positions typically require in-person court appearances and client meetings.
How can I get hired as a attorney in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a summer associate position or judicial clerkship, both of which are actively offered in Maine. The Maine Superior Court and Federal District Court in Portland regularly host law clerks, and firms like Pierce Atwood and Preti Flaherty run structured associate programs for new graduates. Candidates with a Maine bar admission, a clerkship on their record, or demonstrated experience in a specific practice area through a law school clinic gain a measurable edge in early-career hiring.
