Bookkeeper Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a bookkeeper in Maine?
Maine does not require a state-issued license to work as a bookkeeper, so the path focuses on education and credentials. Most Maine employers expect at least an associate degree in accounting or business, and many prefer candidates who have earned the AIPB Certified Bookkeeper designation or completed QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification. Starting in accounts payable or payroll clerk roles at Maine retailers, healthcare systems, or municipal offices is a common first step into full-cycle bookkeeping work.
Which companies hire bookkeepers in Maine?
Employers hiring bookkeepers in Maine right now include Vito Courtney & Associates, Stone Coast Fund Services, and Nicholson Michaud and Company, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's healthcare networks, regional retailers, and its comparatively large nonprofit and government sectors generate consistent bookkeeping demand year-round.
Which Maine cities have the most bookkeeper jobs?
Portland, Winthrop, and Auburn lead Maine for bookkeeper openings. Portland drives the highest volume as the state's commercial hub, anchored by healthcare systems, financial services firms, and a dense cluster of professional services companies, while Bangor and Augusta draw demand from regional healthcare campuses, state government offices, and mid-size retailers.
Are there remote bookkeeper jobs in Maine?
Yes, and more than most fields. Bookkeeping is well-suited to remote work because the core tasks involve software, digital records, and cloud-based accounting platforms rather than on-site handling. About 40% of bookkeeper openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how widely Maine employers have adopted tools like QuickBooks Online and Xero. Full-cycle and payroll bookkeeping roles tend to have the most remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a bookkeeper in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an accounts payable or administrative coordinator role at a Maine healthcare network, regional retailer, or nonprofit, where you handle invoice processing and data entry before moving into full-cycle work. Community College of Maine campuses offer affordable accounting certificate programs that signal readiness to local employers. Earning a QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification strengthens an application considerably, and lateral moves from office manager or billing coordinator positions are a recognized route into bookkeeping at smaller Maine businesses.
Where can I find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in Maine?
You can find and apply to bookkeeper jobs in Maine on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, location preference, and availability, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
