The Accounting Manager directs the day-to-day accounting operations of the hotel and ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial records. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role owns the balance sheet, oversees the income audit and the accounts payable and receivable functions, manages cost and revenue allocations across departments and outlets, and leads a team of accounting professionals. The Accounting Manager safeguards the property's assets, supports month-end and year-end close, and partners with operational leaders to deliver clear, decision-ready financial information.
Key Responsibilities
Balance Sheet & General Ledger
- Maintain full ownership of the hotel balance sheet, ensuring every account is reconciled, supported, and accurate each period.
- Prepare and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations, investigating and resolving variances and aged or unsupported items.
- Oversee the general ledger, journal entries, accruals, prepaid amortizations, and fixed-asset schedules.
- Drive an accurate and timely month-end and year-end close, delivering financial statements within reporting deadlines.
Income Audit
- Supervise the daily income audit to verify that all hotel revenue — rooms, food and beverage, and ancillary outlets — is captured, recorded, and reconciled correctly.
- Review the daily revenue report, audit cashiering and settlement activity, and ensure point-of-sale and property-management system postings agree to the general ledger.
- Identify and correct revenue discrepancies, rate variances, and posting errors, escalating control concerns as needed.
Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable
- Oversee the accounts payable cycle — invoice approval, three-way matching, vendor management, and timely, accurate payment runs.
- Manage the accounts receivable function, including billing, the city ledger, group and event invoicing, collections, and aging follow-up.
- Monitor cash position, credit policy, and vendor and guest credit terms to optimize working capital.
Allocations
- Administer, calculate, and review cost and revenue allocations across departments, outlets, and shared services.
- Ensure overhead, utility, and intercompany or management-fee allocations are applied consistently and in line with policy and management agreements.
- Validate allocation methodologies and update them as the business and departmental structure evolve.
Team Management
- Lead, schedule, and develop the accounting team across income audit, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
- Set performance goals, conduct reviews, coach staff, and build bench strength and cross-training within the department.
- Establish and enforce internal controls, accounting policies, and standard operating procedures, supporting internal and external audits.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent a plus.
- Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, with at least two in a supervisory role; hotel or hospitality experience strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI), and internal-control best practices.

- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with proven leadership of a team.
Key Competencies
- Accuracy, attention to detail, and a strong control mindset.

Technical Accounting Manager Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a technical accounting manager in Maine?
Earning an active CPA license through the Maine Board of Accountancy is the standard gateway to this role. Candidates must complete a qualifying accounting degree, pass the Uniform CPA Examination, and meet Maine's experience requirement under a licensed CPA. Most technical accounting managers in Maine build toward the role through public accounting at a regional or national firm before moving into an industry position, where deep knowledge of GAAP research and financial statement preparation accelerates advancement.
How much do technical accounting managers make in Maine?
Technical accounting managers in Maine earn a median of about $77,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $55,640 for the lowest 10% to over $125,130 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire technical accounting managers in Maine?
Companies currently hiring technical accounting managers in Maine include Vito Courtney & Associates, Northern Light Health, and Stone Coast Fund Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's largest employers in healthcare, grocery and retail distribution, and specialty manufacturing tend to carry the most consistent demand for this role.
Which Maine cities have the most technical accounting manager jobs?
Portland, Winthrop, and Bangor account for the largest share of technical accounting manager openings in Maine. Portland drives the highest volume as Maine's commercial and financial hub, home to regional bank headquarters, health system corporate offices, and mid-market companies that maintain in-house technical accounting teams, while Augusta and Bangor generate demand through state government, healthcare institutions, and manufacturing operations in their surrounding areas.
Are there remote technical accounting manager jobs in Maine?
Yes, and more than most fields, given that technical accounting work centers on analysis, research, and reporting that translates well to remote environments. About 33% of technical accounting manager openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting broader flexibility in finance and accounting hiring. Technical accounting research, policy documentation, and financial reporting tasks are the functions most commonly offered in fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a technical accounting manager in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a staff or senior accountant at a Maine-based regional public accounting firm, where exposure to financial statement audits and GAAP research builds the technical foundation employers expect. MaineHealth, Hannaford, and larger manufacturing companies in the Portland area periodically hire associate or senior accountant roles as stepping stones. Passing the CPA exam before applying, even without a full license, signals readiness and gives candidates a meaningful edge over others at the entry level.
