Certified Public Accountant Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified public accountant in Maine?
To become a CPA in Maine, you must meet the education, examination, and experience requirements set by the Maine Board of Accountancy. Candidates need a bachelor's degree with sufficient accounting and business coursework, must pass all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination, and complete qualifying work experience under a licensed CPA. Once these requirements are met, you apply for licensure directly through the Maine Board of Accountancy.
How much do certified public accountants make in Maine?
Certified public accountants in Maine earn a median of about $77,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $55,640 for the lowest 10% to over $125,130 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire certified public accountants in Maine?
Employers hiring certified public accountants in Maine right now include State of Maine, Vito Courtney & Associates, and Nicholson Michaud and Company, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's strong healthcare, manufacturing, and public-sector presence means CPAs with experience in those industries are particularly well positioned for available roles.
Which Maine cities have the most certified public accountant jobs?
Portland, Winthrop, and Augusta have the most certified public accountant openings in Maine. Portland drives the largest share of postings as the state's commercial hub, home to regional accounting firms, financial services companies, and major employers like IDEXX Laboratories, while Augusta and Bangor generate consistent demand through state government agencies, healthcare systems, and regional professional services firms.
Are there remote certified public accountant jobs in Maine?
Yes, and more than most fields, since certified public accountant work is largely desk-based and well suited to remote arrangements. About 36% of certified public accountant openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting broader trends in professional services hiring. Tax advisory, financial analysis, and client accounting work appear most frequently in fully remote postings.
How can I get hired as a certified public accountant in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a staff accountant or accounting associate role at one of Maine's regional public accounting firms, where structured training programs bring in candidates who are CPA-eligible but not yet licensed. Portland-area firms and employers like MaineHealth and the State of Maine regularly hire recent accounting graduates into junior roles. Completing the CPA exam sections before or during your first role and pursuing the Maine Board of Accountancy's licensing requirements early gives candidates a clear competitive edge over those who wait.
