Financial Accountant Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial accountant in Maine?
Most financial accountant roles in Maine require at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, and many employers prefer candidates who hold or are working toward a CPA license. The Maine State Board of Accountancy oversees CPA licensure in the state. Candidates must complete the required education hours, pass the Uniform CPA Exam, and fulfill the experience requirement before a license is issued. Roles without a CPA requirement typically still expect a relevant degree and demonstrated accounting coursework.
How much do financial accountants make in Maine?
Financial accountants in Maine earn a median of about $77,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $55,640 for the lowest 10% to over $125,130 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire financial accountants in Maine?
Maine financial accountant roles are posted by Vito Courtney & Associates, Stone Coast Fund Services, and Nicholson Michaud and Company and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Healthcare systems, state agencies, and regional financial institutions account for a large share of consistent openings across the state.
Which Maine cities have the most financial accountant jobs?
Portland, Winthrop, and Auburn have the most financial accountant openings in Maine. Portland leads as the state's largest commercial and healthcare hub, anchored by employers like MaineHealth and regional banks, while Augusta concentrates state government and public sector accounting roles, and Bangor draws from healthcare, retail, and university-affiliated organizations in the northern half of the state.
Are there remote financial accountant jobs in Maine?
Yes, and more than many fields. About 42% of financial accountant openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based and analytical nature of the work. Roles focused on financial reporting, general ledger reconciliation, and budgeting are the most commonly offered in remote or hybrid formats, while positions requiring on-site collaboration with operations or leadership tend to stay in-person.
How can I get hired as a financial accountant in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an accounting associate or staff accountant role at a Maine healthcare system or state agency, where entry-level candidates with a relevant degree are regularly considered. MaineHealth and the State of Maine's Bureau of Human Resources both post associate-level accounting positions suited to new graduates. Moving laterally from accounts payable, payroll, or bookkeeping roles is another common path. Pursuing CPA exam eligibility early gives candidates a clear advantage over others at the same experience level.
