Accountant Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a accountant in Maine?
To become a licensed CPA in Maine, you must meet education requirements, pass the Uniform CPA Exam, and apply through the Maine Board of Accountancy. Most candidates need a bachelor's degree with at least 150 semester hours of education, including specific accounting coursework. After passing the exam and completing the required experience hours under a licensed CPA, you apply for licensure. Staff accountant roles that do not require a CPA license typically require at minimum a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
How much do accountants make in Maine?
Accountants in Maine earn a median of about $77,480 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $55,640 for the lowest 10% to over $125,130 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire accountants in Maine?
Maine accountant roles are posted by Vito Courtney & Associates, Stone Coast Fund Services, and Nicholson Michaud and Company and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Healthcare systems, regional banks, state agencies, and manufacturers are among the most consistent sources of accountant openings across the state.
Which Maine cities have the most accountant jobs?
Portland, Winthrop, and Auburn have the most accountant openings in Maine. Portland leads as the state's commercial and financial hub, home to the largest concentration of corporate offices, healthcare networks, and professional services firms, while Augusta drives demand through state government agencies and Bangor anchors the eastern Maine market with healthcare and regional banking employers.
Are there remote accountant jobs in Maine?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 42% of accountant openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how well the core work translates to off-site arrangements. Roles in financial reporting, tax preparation, and management accounting are the most likely to offer full remote or hybrid flexibility, while positions requiring on-site access to physical records or facilities tend to be in-person.
How can I get hired as a accountant in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for staff accountant or accounting assistant roles that list a bachelor's degree as the primary requirement and treat experience as preferred rather than required. MaineHealth and state of Maine agencies regularly bring on entry-level accounting staff through new-grad hiring cycles. Community college programs at institutions like Southern Maine Community College also feed directly into bookkeeping and accounting clerk roles, which are strong lateral moves into staff accountant positions. Pursuing your CPA exam sections early gives candidates a clear competitive edge over other applicants without experience.
Where can I find and apply to accountant jobs in Maine?
You can find and apply to accountant jobs in Maine on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and preferences, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
