Behavioral Health Case Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a behavioral health case manager in California?
The most direct path is completing a bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or counseling and applying to county behavioral health or Medi-Cal health plan roles that accept unlicensed candidates. Many California employers require or strongly prefer candidates working toward licensure through the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, which oversees LCSW, LMFT, and LPCC credentials. Registered associate status with the BBS while accruing supervised hours is widely accepted for case management positions across the state.
Which companies hire behavioral health case managers in California?
Employers hiring behavioral health case managers in California right now include The People Concern, HealthRIGHT 360, and Clinica Sierra Vista, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large county behavioral health departments, Medi-Cal managed care organizations, and integrated health systems generate the most consistent openings across the state.
Which California cities have the most behavioral health case manager jobs?
Los Angeles, Bakersfield, and Pomona have the most behavioral health case manager openings in California. Los Angeles dominates due to its sheer population size, county Department of Mental Health scale, and density of community clinics, while Sacramento concentrates hiring through state agency programs and large regional health systems, and San Francisco draws openings from its established network of integrated behavioral health and homeless services providers.
Are there remote behavioral health case manager jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited, because behavioral health case management is largely a relationship-driven, field-based role that involves in-person assessments, home visits, and care team meetings. About 5% of behavioral health case manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be concentrated in utilization management, telephonic care coordination, and insurance-based case management rather than direct community or county work.
How can I get hired as a behavioral health case manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a mental health case aide, community health worker, or peer support specialist role at a California county behavioral health department or Federally Qualified Health Center, where on-the-job training is standard. Large county systems such as Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and Alameda County Behavioral Health run structured new-staff training programs. Lateral moves from social services, crisis line, or residential counselor roles are common, and completing a BBS-registered supervised hours plan while working gives you a competitive edge for advancement.
Where can I find and apply to behavioral health case manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to behavioral health case manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across county agencies, health systems, managed care plans, and community organizations. Find roles that fit your experience and credentials and apply directly.
