Medical Technologist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical technologist in California?
To work as a medical technologist in California you need an active Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services. Licensure requires a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or a qualifying biological science, completion of an approved clinical training program, and passing the California CLS licensure examination. ASCP certification is not required by the state but is widely expected by California hospital employers.
Which companies hire medical technologists in California?
Employers hiring medical technologists in California right now include Kindred Hospitals, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and Ionian Technologies, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense network of integrated health systems and academic medical centers generates consistent laboratory staffing demand throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most medical technologist jobs?
San Francisco, Sunnyvale, and Beverly Hills have the most medical technologist openings in California. Los Angeles drives the highest volume because of its concentration of large hospital networks and public health laboratories, while San Francisco and San Diego benefit from major academic medical centers and biotechnology-linked reference laboratories that require clinical testing staff year-round.
Are there remote medical technologist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Medical technologist work is fundamentally hands-on and laboratory-based, so most positions require on-site presence to operate analyzers, process specimens, and report results in real time. About 6% of medical technologist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be in laboratory quality, data review, or telehealth support functions rather than bench work.
How can I get hired as a medical technologist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a California CDPH-approved clinical training program attached to a hospital or university, which many large systems such as Kaiser Permanente and UCLA Health offer to new graduates. Applying for phlebotomist or laboratory assistant roles within those systems is a common lateral move that gets candidates inside the lab and visible to hiring supervisors. Holding a California CLS license, even before accumulating bench hours, is the single credential that opens the most doors.
Where can I find and apply to medical technologist jobs in California?
