Position Title: Bilingual Pharmacy Technician
Reports To: Clinical Pharmacist
Status: Full Time
FTE Classification: Non-Exempt (Hourly)/40.0 hours per week
POSITION SUMMARY: The Bilingual Clinical Pharmacy Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and accurate dispensing of medications. They accurately prepare prescriptions, facilitate communication with providers and patients for refill requests and prior authorizations, and enroll patients in assistance programs. Additionally, they handle billing procedures and maintain inventory levels. Their expertise extends to navigating insurance formularies and assisting patients in saving costs through manufacturer offers. The pharmacy technician also fulfills an educational role, teaching patients how to use monitoring devices for chronic diseases and ensuring patients understand medication instructions. Their diligent record-keeping and readiness to assist with audits and special projects underscore their essential role in the healthcare team.
Essential Duties:
- Accurately prepares prescriptions according to providers’ orders for pharmacist or provider verification.
- Assists pharmacist by completing tasks appropriate for technicians.
- Communicates with providers, pharmacies and patients to complete refill requests from local pharmacies.
- Reviews patient history and insurance formularies to complete prior authorizations or find suitable alternatives.
- Enrolls patients in Patient Assistance Programs (PAP) for their medications and orders refills for on-time arrival.
- Identify cost savings opportunities for patients including 340B, PAP, etc.
- Bills for prescriptions through insurance or internally through electronic medical record as appropriate.
- Maintains appropriate inventory based on need and budget.
- Navigates insurance medication formularies and manufacturers’ savings offers to save patients money.
- Educates patients on how to use non-invasive devices to monitor chronic diseases, such as a home blood pressure cuff, under the supervision of pharmacist, provider, or nurse.
- Educates patients on instructions listed on medication containers, including for chronic diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, COPD, and asthma.
- 1 Maintains appropriate documentation in the electronic medical record, pharmacy databases and or logs, etc.
- Assists with audits and special projects as directed by Senior Management.
Education & Qualification Requirements:
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (ie: through PTCB or NHA), must have within 120 days of hire.
- High School Diploma or GED certificate, required.
- Minimum six (6) months’ pharmacy technician experience in clinic or outpatient environment.
- Experience in EMR database (e.g., eClinical Works, preferred).
- Bilingual – English/Spanish, highly desired.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability and Work Difficulty:
- Knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminology.
- Ability to understand drug orders.
- Knowledge of procedures for operating automated technology and computer systems.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical inventory methodology.
- Correct English/Spanish usage, spelling and grammar.
- Ability to work independently from general instructions.
- Able to recognize needs and concerns of individuals within their cultural framework.
- Able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Able to accurately perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Able to communication/interprets Shalom Health Care Center’s services and policies to patients and families.
- Able to work independently in the absence of supervision.
