Biology Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a biology in California?
Most biology roles in California require at minimum a bachelor's degree in biology or a related life science, with many research and industry positions preferring a master's or doctorate. While California does not issue a general biology license, specific paths such as environmental scientist roles may involve registration with the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, and clinical laboratory work requires a California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license through the California Department of Public Health.
How much do biologies make in California?
Biologies in California earn a median of about $129,150 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $75,280 for the lowest 10% to over $250,700 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire biologys in California?
Employers hiring biologys in California right now include Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Stantec, and Altos Labs, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of biotech firms, academic medical centers, and environmental consulting agencies means consistent openings across a wide range of biology disciplines statewide.
Which California cities have the most biology jobs?
San Francisco, La Jolla, and Redwood City have the most biology job openings in California. The Bay Area's concentration of biotechnology and pharmaceutical headquarters drives volume in that region, San Diego's robust life sciences corridor including major research institutions supports strong demand there, and Los Angeles draws hiring through its large academic medical centers, environmental agencies, and growing biotech sector.
Are there remote biology jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Biology work is largely hands-on and lab- or field-based, so fully remote positions make up a small share of openings. About 16% of biology openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in roles such as bioinformatics, regulatory affairs, scientific writing, and data analysis rather than bench research or fieldwork.
How can I get hired as a biology in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a research assistant or laboratory technician role, which California's biotech and university employers regularly hire for with a bachelor's degree and coursework-based lab skills. UC campuses, Cedars-Sinai, and large pharmaceutical employers in San Diego and the Bay Area run formal internship and new-graduate programs that are open to candidates without professional experience. Building a portfolio of independent projects, volunteering in a campus core facility, or completing a California Community College biotechnology certificate can give your application a competitive edge.
Where can I find and apply to biology jobs in California?
You can find and apply to biology jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
