Biotech Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a biotech in California?
Most biotech roles in California require a bachelor's degree at minimum in a life science such as biology, biochemistry, or chemical engineering, with many research and development positions preferring a master's or PhD. California does not issue a state license specifically for biotech professionals, but roles in clinical laboratory science require licensure through the California Department of Public Health's Laboratory Field Services. Entry into industry typically flows through university programs at UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, or Cal Poly, followed by internships or contract lab positions at established California biotech or pharma companies.
Which companies hire biotechs in California?
Employers hiring biotechs in California right now include University of California, San Francisco, Revolution Medicines, and City of Hope, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of life sciences headquarters and research campuses means hiring is distributed across Bay Area, San Diego, and Los Angeles corridors, with large employers maintaining multiple facilities in the state.
Which California cities have the most biotech jobs?
San Francisco, San Diego, and South San Francisco are the California cities with the most biotech openings. The San Francisco Bay Area leads because it hosts the original cluster of major biotech headquarters and is adjacent to research universities that feed the talent pipeline, while San Diego's Torrey Pines and Sorrento Valley corridors have grown into a major hub, and Los Angeles draws biotech activity through its medical centers and growing biopharma presence.
Are there remote biotech jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Biotech work is largely hands-on and lab-based, which limits remote options significantly. About 5% of biotech openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be concentrated in roles like regulatory affairs, bioinformatics, clinical data management, and medical writing rather than bench research or manufacturing.
How can I get hired as a biotech in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a contract or temporary lab associate role, which large California contract research organizations and staffing agencies place frequently and which count as direct industry experience. Companies like Genentech and Amgen run formal internship and new-grad rotational programs for candidates with a relevant degree but no full-time experience. Lateral entry from clinical laboratory technician or quality control positions at California hospitals or diagnostic labs is also common. A California clinical laboratory scientist license from the Department of Public Health strengthens applications for roles that touch patient samples.
Where can I find and apply to biotech jobs in California?
You can find and apply to biotech jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers actively hiring. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
