Biotech Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a biotech in New York?
Most biotech roles in New York require at minimum a bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a related life science field, with many research and development positions preferring a master's or doctorate. New York does not issue a state license specific to biotechnicians, so hiring decisions center on education, laboratory competency, and relevant certifications such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology credential for laboratory professionals working in clinical settings.
Which companies hire biotechs in New York?
Employers hiring biotechs in New York right now include Columbia University, University at Buffalo, and New York University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of major pharmaceutical headquarters, academic medical centers, and biomanufacturing facilities means consistent year-round openings across a wide range of specializations and seniority levels.
Which New York cities have the most biotech jobs?
The cities with the most biotech openings in New York are New York, Buffalo, and Rochester. New York City dominates due to its density of pharmaceutical campuses, hospital research networks, and biotechnology startups, while areas like Long Island and the Hudson Valley are anchored by large established biopharma manufacturers and contract research organizations that maintain ongoing recruitment outside the main metro.
Are there remote biotech jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Most biotech work is hands-on and requires physical access to laboratory equipment, cell cultures, or biomanufacturing environments that cannot be replicated remotely. About 3% of biotech openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in regulatory affairs, biostatistics, medical writing, or clinical data management rather than bench science.
How can I get hired as a biotech in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a laboratory technician or research associate role at one of New York's academic medical centers or contract research organizations, where prior coursework and undergraduate lab experience often satisfy basic requirements. Large New York employers including Memorial Sloan Kettering and New York-Presbyterian run structured new graduate programs and co-op partnerships with local universities. Building practical experience through CUNY or SUNY research programs and earning an ASCP certification strengthens a candidate's profile considerably for competitive entry-level openings.
Where can I find and apply to biotech jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to biotech jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and location, and apply directly to the employer through the listing.
