Business Intelligence Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a business intelligence engineer in California?
There is no state-issued license required to work as a business intelligence engineer in California. Most employers in the state look for a bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, information systems, or a related field, combined with demonstrated SQL and BI tool experience. California's competitive tech market also rewards candidates who build a portfolio of data projects, contribute to open-source work, or earn vendor certifications in platforms like Tableau, dbt, or Google Cloud.
How much do business intelligence engineers make in California?
Business intelligence engineers in California earn a median of about $141,590 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,480 for the lowest 10% to over $224,920 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire business intelligence engineers in California?
Employers hiring business intelligence engineers in California right now include Intuit, Apple, and Walmart, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, large health systems, and financial institutions means demand is spread across industries, not limited to pure tech firms.
Which California cities have the most business intelligence engineer jobs?
San Francisco, San Diego, and Mountain View have the most business intelligence engineer openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of the density of technology and cloud-infrastructure companies headquartered there, while Los Angeles draws demand from media, entertainment, and e-commerce, and San Diego's large biotech and defense sectors support a steady share of openings.
Are there remote business intelligence engineer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields, because BI engineering work is primarily analytical and laptop-based with few requirements for physical presence. About 27% of business intelligence engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how deeply distributed work has taken hold in the California tech sector. Dashboard development, pipeline maintenance, and stakeholder reporting are the parts of the role most commonly performed fully remote.
How can I get hired as a business intelligence engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior data analyst or associate BI developer role, which many large California employers use as a pipeline into full BI engineering positions. Companies like Kaiser Permanente, Salesforce, and major California-based insurance and financial services firms run structured new-graduate programs or rotational data roles that provide hands-on experience. Building a portfolio of SQL projects and a certification in a widely used BI platform like Tableau or Looker gives entry-level candidates a concrete edge in a competitive California applicant pool.
