Business Intelligence Engineer Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a business intelligence engineer in Illinois?
Business intelligence engineering in Illinois requires no state-issued license or registration, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skill. Most Illinois employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Building proficiency in SQL, a major BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau, and a cloud platform strengthens any application. Vendor certifications from Microsoft, Google, or AWS are widely recognized by Illinois employers and help candidates stand out in a competitive Chicago-area market.
How much do business intelligence engineers make in Illinois?
Business intelligence engineers in Illinois earn a median of about $106,560 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $68,810 for the lowest 10% to over $168,880 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire business intelligence engineers in Illinois?
Employers hiring business intelligence engineers in Illinois right now include Ryerson, GEICO, and AbbVie, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters in financial services, insurance, and retail means that large, established corporate employers make up a significant share of available roles.
Which Illinois cities have the most business intelligence engineer jobs?
Chicago, Downers Grove, and Itasca have the most business intelligence engineer openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because of its dense cluster of corporate headquarters in finance, healthcare, and technology, while Naperville and Schaumburg generate consistent demand from large suburban campuses where major insurers, consulting firms, and enterprise technology companies are based.
Are there remote business intelligence engineer jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields, since business intelligence engineering is almost entirely desk-based and deliverables are digital. About 83% of business intelligence engineer openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting broad employer acceptance of distributed analytical work. Roles focused on dashboard development, reporting automation, and data modeling are the most likely to be offered with full or partial remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a business intelligence engineer in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior data analyst or reporting analyst role, which large Illinois employers in healthcare and financial services regularly fill with recent graduates. Companies such as Advocate Health Care, Northern Trust, and Aon have historically hired entry-level analysts who grow into BI engineering functions. Building a portfolio of SQL queries, a published Tableau or Power BI dashboard, and completing a cloud provider's foundational certification gives a candidate concrete proof of skill that compensates for limited work history.
Where can I find and apply to business intelligence engineer jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to business intelligence engineer jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your experience and location, and apply directly to each listing.
