What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in business intelligence engineer jobs.
- Proficiency in SQL for complex data modeling and query optimization
- Experience with cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift
- Hands-on work with BI tools including Tableau, Power BI, or Looker

- Familiarity with Python or R for data transformation and automation tasks
Tips for Your Business Intelligence Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume for each stack
Business intelligence engineer job descriptions vary sharply by tool. A posting that centers on Snowflake and dbt needs different resume emphasis than one built around Redshift and Informatica. Swap your featured skills and project bullets to match each listing before you apply.
Showcase end-to-end pipeline ownership
Hiring managers want proof you built something, not just queried it. Describe projects where you owned the full data flow, from ingestion through transformation to the dashboard your stakeholders used, and quantify the outcome, even if just the scale of data moved.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists business intelligence engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target companies with mature data cultures
Look for postings that mention a dedicated data platform or analytics engineering team. Those organizations already have infrastructure and defined BI workflows, so you'll spend less time justifying the value of the work and more time actually building.
Prepare for a technical take-home in the loop
Most BI engineer interview loops include a take-home case involving a messy dataset. Practice building a clean dimensional model and a polished summary dashboard from raw CSV files so you're not learning the format under pressure during the actual process.
Negotiate scope, not just base pay
In your offer conversation, ask which data domains you'll own, whether the role has a roadmap for platform ownership, and how decisions about tooling get made. Scope and autonomy affect your growth in the role as much as the initial offer does.
Business Intelligence Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most business intelligence engineers?
The companies hiring the most business intelligence engineers right now include Amazon, Walmart, and Capgemini, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is consistently high in financial services, healthcare systems, and large-scale retail and e-commerce organizations.
How many business intelligence engineer jobs are remote?
About 40% of business intelligence engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting strong employer flexibility for data-focused roles. Cloud-native positions involving Snowflake, dbt, or Looker tend to have the highest rate of remote availability, since the entire stack is accessible from anywhere.
How do you become a business intelligence engineer?
Start by building strong SQL skills and learn how to design dimensional data models from scratch. Then add experience with at least one major cloud warehouse and one BI visualization tool. Build portfolio projects that show a full pipeline you designed and deployed. Roles with titles like BI developer or analytics engineer are common entry points before moving into engineering-focused positions.
Can you get a business intelligence engineer job with little experience?
Yes, but you need to compensate with a strong portfolio. Build a public project that pulls raw data into a structured warehouse schema, applies transformations in dbt or a similar tool, and surfaces results in Tableau or Power BI. Roles labeled BI developer, junior BI analyst, or analytics engineer are more accessible than senior engineer titles and provide a realistic path into the field.
What does the business intelligence engineer interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a recruiter screen, followed by a technical phone interview focused on SQL, data modeling concepts, and your experience with specific tools. A take-home assignment involving a dataset you model and visualize is common at the next stage. Final rounds usually include a live coding exercise, a presentation of your take-home work, and conversations with stakeholders or product teams who use the BI output.
Where can I find and apply to business intelligence engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to business intelligence engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your skills and experience and apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
