General Description
The Finance Director provides strategic leadership, oversight, and administration of the financial operations of Open Bible Church of Rapid City, including the church, Creekside Christian School, and Dream Kids Preschool & Children's Center. Serving as a member of the Ministry Leadership Team, this position is responsible for directing financial planning, budgeting, accounting, internal controls, regulatory compliance, financial reporting, and stewardship practices that support the mission and long-term sustainability of the organization.
The Finance Director develops and implements financial strategies, advises executive leadership and the Board of Directors on financial matters, establishes and maintains sound financial policies and procedures, oversees financial systems and controls, and promotes responsible stewardship of organizational resources to ensure fiscal integrity, operational effectiveness, and mission advancement.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.
- CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credential preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible financial management experience, including supervisory and organizational leadership responsibilities.
- Experience in nonprofit, church, educational, or ministry finance preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls.

Term and Compensation
This is a full-time salaried exempt position. Exempt status is based upon the primary duties and responsibilities assigned to the position and applicable federal and state wage and hour laws.
The Finance Director reports directly to the Executive Pastor and serves as a member of the Ministry Leadership Team.
Because this position provides organizational leadership and oversight, the Finance Director is expected to devote the time necessary to effectively fulfill the responsibilities of the role, including occasional evenings, weekends, ministry events, budget planning cycles, audits, and other seasonal operational demands. Limited remote work may be approved based upon ministry needs and operational requirements.
Core Responsibilities
1. Executive Financial Leadership
- Provide executive leadership for all financial operations of the church, school, and daycare.
- Develop long-range financial strategies supporting organizational mission, sustainability, and ministry growth.
- Advise the Executive Pastor, Executive Leadership Team, Board of Directors, and ministry leaders regarding financial planning, organizational risk, and resource stewardship.
- Evaluate financial trends and recommend strategic initiatives, capital investments, and organizational improvements.
- Develop, implement, and periodically revise financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
2. Financial Planning, Budgeting & Analysis
- Direct the annual budgeting process for all ministry areas.
- Develop long-range financial forecasts and cash flow projections.
- Monitor organizational financial performance and recommend corrective actions when appropriate.
- Review departmental budgets and provide financial consultation to ministry leaders.
- Analyze operational trends, revenues, expenditures, and ministry performance to support executive decision-making.
3. Accounting Operations, Compliance & Internal Controls
- Direct accounting operations to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant financial reporting.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal and state tax regulations, nonprofit reporting requirements, and applicable financial regulations.
- Oversee payroll administration, benefits accounting, tax reporting, and related financial processes.
- Maintain effective systems of internal controls, financial documentation, record retention, and risk management.
- Coordinate external audits, financial reviews, and governmental reporting requirements.
4. Financial Reporting & Organizational Stewardship
- Prepare and present monthly financial statements, dashboards, budget analyses, and financial reports to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
- Communicate financial information in a manner that supports informed organizational decision-making.
- Develop meaningful financial metrics and performance indicators.
- Promote responsible stewardship and accountability across all ministry departments.
5. Leadership, Systems & Organizational Development
- Provide leadership and direction for finance office personnel and volunteers, including assigning work, establishing priorities, coaching performance, and fostering professional development.
- Evaluate financial systems and recommend improvements that enhance operational efficiency, internal controls, and organizational effectiveness.
- Oversee implementation of financial software, reporting tools, and technology improvements.
- Collaborate with Human Resources regarding compensation administration, payroll practices, benefits accounting, and related financial policies.
- Develop succession planning, cross-training, and continuity procedures for essential financial operations.
Additional Responsibilities
- Lead periodic review and maintenance of the organization's chart of accounts.
- Establish documentation standards supporting audits, insurance requirements, grants, and regulatory compliance.
- Develop financial training resources for ministry leaders and budget managers.
- Participate in board meetings, committee meetings, and organizational planning sessions as requested.
- Perform other leadership responsibilities consistent with the nature and scope of the position as assigned by the Executive Pastor.
Pay: $55,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
