Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner Jobs in District of Columbia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified registered nurse practitioner in District of Columbia?
You become a certified registered nurse practitioner in D.C. by earning a master's or doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited NP program, passing a national certification exam through the AANP or ANCC, and then applying for an APRN license through the District of Columbia Board of Nursing. D.C. also requires a separate prescriptive authority registration with the DC Board of Pharmacy before you can prescribe independently, which is a step unique to the district.
How much do certified registered nurse practitioners make in District of Columbia?
Certified registered nurse practitioners in District of Columbia earn a median of about $135,880 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $115,200 for the lowest 10% to over $180,300 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire certified registered nurse practitioners in District of Columbia?
District of Columbia certified registered nurse practitioner roles are posted by Children's National Hospital, MedStar Health, and One Medical and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. D.C.'s mix of large academic medical systems, federally qualified health centers, and Veterans Affairs facilities means there is consistent demand across a broad range of practice settings.
Which District of Columbia cities have the most certified registered nurse practitioner jobs?
Washington and Foggy Bottom have the most certified registered nurse practitioner openings in District of Columbia. Washington, D.C. itself dominates the market because it is home to the region's major hospital systems, the VA Medical Center, and a dense network of community health centers, while nearby areas in the metro reflect the presence of large suburban campuses and federally affiliated clinics that serve the broader population.
Are there remote certified registered nurse practitioner jobs in District of Columbia?
Yes, but they are rare. About 25% of certified registered nurse practitioner openings tied to District of Columbia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that most NP roles require in-person patient care. The portions of the role most likely to be conducted remotely are telehealth consultations, chronic disease management follow-ups, and behavioral health sessions offered through D.C.-based digital health providers.
How can I get hired as a certified registered nurse practitioner in District of Columbia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate NP residency or fellowship, and D.C. has strong options through MedStar Health's NP residency program and the federally funded Unity Health Care community health center network, both of which actively recruit new graduates. Candidates coming from RN roles in acute care or primary care settings within D.C. hospitals have an easier transition because hiring managers recognize the clinical context. Completing your DC APRN license and prescriptive authority registration before applying, along with a clinical portfolio that documents your practicum hours, gives you a concrete edge over candidates who have not finished that paperwork.
Where can I find and apply to certified registered nurse practitioner jobs in District of Columbia?
You can find and apply to certified registered nurse practitioner jobs in District of Columbia on Migrate Mate, which lists current D.C. openings from employers across healthcare systems, community health organizations, and federal facilities. Find roles that fit your specialty and experience level and apply directly to each one.
