Physician Jobs in District of Columbia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a physician in District of Columbia?
To become a physician in District of Columbia, you must obtain a medical license through the D.C. Health Professional Licensing Administration, which requires a medical degree from an accredited school, completion of an accredited residency program, and passage of the USMLE or COMLEX licensing examinations. D.C. participates in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which can expedite licensure for physicians already licensed in a compact member state.
Which companies hire physicians in District of Columbia?
Companies currently hiring physicians in District of Columbia include MedStar Health, One Medical, and Unity Health Care, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. D.C.'s concentration of academic medical centers, federally affiliated health systems, and large outpatient networks means physician demand is spread across inpatient, research, and ambulatory care settings.
Which District of Columbia cities have the most physician jobs?
The cities with the most physician openings in District of Columbia are Washington and Chevy Chase. Washington, D.C. itself accounts for the overwhelming share of listings, driven by its dense network of academic medical centers, federal health agencies including the NIH Clinical Center and Walter Reed, and a large privately insured urban population that sustains robust outpatient and specialty practices.
Are there remote physician jobs in District of Columbia?
Yes, but they're rare. About 58% of physician openings tied to District of Columbia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most clinical work. The roles most likely to allow remote or hybrid arrangements are in telemedicine, utilization management, and health policy consulting, which are particularly prevalent given D.C.'s concentration of federal agencies and healthcare policy organizations.
How can I get hired as a physician in District of Columbia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a residency or fellowship through D.C.-based programs at institutions like MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, George Washington University Hospital, or Children's National Hospital, which regularly match new medical graduates into structured training roles. After training, many physicians transition into their first attending position within the same system. Candidates who complete their training in D.C. and hold an active D.C. medical license have a meaningful advantage in local hiring pipelines.
