DC is not part of the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses licensed in other states must apply for a DC-specific license before starting an assignment. Most travel contracts also require at least one year of recent acute care experience in your specialty.

Washington, DC itself drives the vast majority of demand given its density of major hospital systems, federal health agencies, and specialty care institutions, while listings tied to nearby suburban areas reflect the broader metro healthcare network that many DC-licensed nurses serve.
How can I get hired as a travel nurse rn in District of Columbia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a new-graduate RN residency program, and DC's major systems, including MedStar Health and Children's National Hospital, run structured residency and transition-to-practice programs designed for nurses with little or no experience. These programs place new RNs in med-surg or step-down units before moving into higher-acuity settings. Holding an active DC Board of Nursing license and a BSN gives candidates a meaningful edge when applying to these competitive cohorts.
