Registered Nurse Operating Room Jobs in District of Columbia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered nurse operating room in District of Columbia?
You must hold an active registered nurse license issued by the District of Columbia Board of Nursing, which requires passing the NCLEX-RN after completing an accredited associate or bachelor's degree nursing program. Most District of Columbia employers then require completion of a structured perioperative orientation or new-grad residency before independent practice in the OR. Pursuing CNOR certification from the Competency and Credentialing Institute strengthens your candidacy significantly with D.C.-area surgical employers.
How much do registered nurse operating rooms make in District of Columbia?
Registered nurse operating rooms in District of Columbia earn a median of about $102,540 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,390 for the lowest 10% to over $151,170 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered nurse operating rooms in District of Columbia?
Companies currently hiring registered nurse operating rooms in District of Columbia include Children's National Hospital, MedStar Health, and American Traveler, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The District of Columbia's dense concentration of academic medical centers and specialty surgical hospitals means most openings come from large health systems with ongoing perioperative staffing programs rather than smaller independent facilities.
Which District of Columbia cities have the most registered nurse operating room jobs?
The cities with the most registered nurse operating room openings in District of Columbia are Washington. The distribution reflects Washington's role as a hub for major academic medical centers and federally affiliated hospitals, while any suburban listings in areas like Bethesda or Silver Spring are driven by large systems such as MedStar and NIH Clinical Center operating facilities just across the city boundary.
Are there remote registered nurse operating room jobs in District of Columbia?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of registered nurse operating room openings tied to District of Columbia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, since the core perioperative role requires direct patient care in a sterile surgical environment. The small share of remote-eligible positions typically involves perioperative care coordination, surgical scheduling, or clinical education roles rather than hands-on scrub or circulating duties.
How can I get hired as a registered nurse operating room in District of Columbia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to new-graduate perioperative residency programs, which MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Children's National Hospital run for RNs without OR-specific backgrounds. These structured programs provide supervised scrub and circulating training over several months. Candidates coming from PACU, surgical ICU, or procedural nursing roles in D.C.-area facilities are also strong candidates, and completing your CNOR exam early signals commitment that local hiring managers consistently reward.
Where can I find and apply to registered nurse operating room jobs in District of Columbia?
You can find and apply to registered nurse operating room jobs in District of Columbia on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings in the area. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and specialty, and apply directly to whichever positions fit your background and schedule preferences.
