Civil Engineering Intern Jobs in Kansas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil engineering intern in Kansas?
To become a civil engineering intern in Kansas, you need active enrollment in or recent graduation from an ABET-accredited civil engineering program, since most employers and the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions use accreditation as a baseline qualification. Completing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam through the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions strengthens your candidacy and starts your path toward professional licensure, which many Kansas employers encourage interns to pursue early.
Which companies hire civil engineering interns in Kansas?
Companies currently hiring civil engineering interns in Kansas include Black & Veatch, GAS GLOBAL SERVICES, and Olsson, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kansas also sees consistent intern hiring from state and municipal agencies, regional consulting firms, and large infrastructure contractors tied to KDOT project work.
Which Kansas cities have the most civil engineering intern jobs?
Overland Park, Kansas City, and Wichita lead Kansas for civil engineering intern openings. Wichita anchors demand through its concentration of engineering consultancies and proximity to major highway and stormwater projects, Kansas City benefits from large regional firms like HNTB and Burns & McDonnell headquartered nearby, and Topeka draws interns through state agency work with KDOT and municipal infrastructure programs.
Are there remote civil engineering intern jobs in Kansas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 40% of civil engineering intern openings tied to Kansas are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of the work requires site visits, lab access, and in-person collaboration with project teams. The portions most amenable to remote work include preliminary design drafting, data analysis, and report writing for desk-based project phases.
How can I get hired as a civil engineering intern in Kansas with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is applying directly to KDOT's student intern program, which recruits undergraduates with no prior professional experience and assigns them to active transportation or bridge projects across the state. Large Kansas consulting firms such as Burns & McDonnell and HNTB also run structured summer intern cohorts designed for students after their first or second year. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early and building a portfolio of class projects in AutoCAD or Civil 3D gives candidates a measurable edge over applicants relying on coursework alone.
Where can I find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in Kansas?
You can find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in Kansas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Kansas openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your program year and technical background, and apply directly to whichever positions fit your situation.
