Civil Engineering Intern Jobs in Minnesota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil engineering intern in Minnesota?
Becoming a civil engineering intern in Minnesota starts with enrollment in an ABET-accredited civil engineering program at a school such as the University of Minnesota, Minnesota State University Mankato, or the University of Minnesota Duluth. After completing foundational coursework, many students sit for the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering exam to earn the Engineer in Training designation, which is administered through the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Geoscience, Landscape Architecture, Land Surveying, and Interior Design. Holding that credential before graduation strengthens applications considerably.
Which companies hire civil engineering interns in Minnesota?
Employers hiring civil engineering interns in Minnesota right now include Bolton & Menk, Kimley-Horn, and TKDA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Minnesota's concentration of transportation and water infrastructure projects means public agencies and large regional consultancies tend to post the most consistent intern openings across the state.
Which Minnesota cities have the most civil engineering intern jobs?
The cities with the most civil engineering intern openings in Minnesota are Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Duluth. The Twin Cities drive the majority of postings because the metro anchors the headquarters of major engineering consultancies and the Minnesota Department of Transportation's central district, while smaller cities like Duluth and Rochester generate openings through port, highway, and healthcare campus infrastructure projects tied to large institutional employers.
Are there remote civil engineering intern jobs in Minnesota?
Yes, but they're rare. Civil engineering intern work is largely site-dependent, involving field measurements, inspections, and in-office CAD drafting that requires physical presence. About 43% of civil engineering intern openings tied to Minnesota are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those tend to cover tasks like data analysis, report writing, and preliminary design work that can be completed away from the project site.
How can I get hired as a civil engineering intern in Minnesota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to internship programs at Minnesota's large public-sector employers and consulting firms before completing your degree. The Minnesota Department of Transportation runs a structured student internship program that accepts applicants with limited experience, and regional firms like WSB and Bolton & Menk regularly hire first- and second-year students for summer field technician roles that transition into engineering intern positions. Earning your Engineer in Training designation through the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Geoscience, Landscape Architecture, Land Surveying, and Interior Design early in your program gives your application a measurable edge over candidates who have not yet sat for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
Where can I find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in Minnesota?
You can find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in Minnesota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings to see which roles match your program year, specialization, and preferred location, then apply directly to the positions that fit.
