Civil Engineering Intern Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil engineering intern in Tennessee?
You become a civil engineering intern in Tennessee by enrolling in an ABET-accredited civil engineering program and completing at least one year of core coursework. Tennessee does not require a license to work as an intern, but students planning toward licensure can take the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, administered through the Tennessee State Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners, which strengthens your candidacy and starts the path toward a Professional Engineer license.
Which companies hire civil engineering interns in Tennessee?
Companies currently hiring civil engineering interns in Tennessee include Bohler, Kimley-Horn, and WSP, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Tennessee's active transportation infrastructure program and growing municipal construction pipeline mean openings appear consistently at both large consultancies and state agency contractors.
Which Tennessee cities have the most civil engineering intern jobs?
Nashville, Franklin, and Memphis have the most civil engineering intern openings in Tennessee. Nashville leads due to its ongoing transit expansion, highway widening projects, and concentration of engineering consultancies, while Memphis draws demand from port and freight infrastructure work and Knoxville benefits from TVA projects and the engineering programs at the University of Tennessee that feed local employer pipelines.
Are there remote civil engineering intern jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, but they're rare. Civil engineering intern work is largely field-based, requiring site visits, survey work, and in-person collaboration on construction documents. About 33% of civil engineering intern openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those positions typically involve GIS analysis, AutoCAD drafting, or data processing tasks that can be completed off-site.
How can I get hired as a civil engineering intern in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is applying directly to internship programs run by the Tennessee Department of Transportation and TVA, both of which recruit students with limited field experience. Candidates who have completed an AutoCAD or Civil 3D course, contributed to a university design-build team, or taken a fundamentals of surveying class consistently stand out. Engineering technician roles at county public works departments also offer a foot in the door for students still building their project hours.
Where can I find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in Tennessee?
You can find and apply to civil engineering intern jobs in Tennessee on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your academic year and technical background, and apply directly through each listing.
