Coding Specialist Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a coding specialist in Virginia?
Virginia does not issue a state coding license, so the path centers on earning a nationally recognized credential through AHIMA or AAPC, such as the Certified Professional Coder credential from AAPC or the Certified Coding Specialist credential from AHIMA. Most Virginia employers require or strongly prefer one of these credentials alongside a health information management program, a coding-focused certificate, or an associate degree. Completing a credential before applying puts you ahead of most candidates.
How much do coding specialists make in Virginia?
Coding specialists in Virginia earn a median of about $121,610 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $67,010 for the lowest 10% to over $182,890 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire coding specialists in Virginia?
Employers hiring coding specialists in Virginia right now include University of Virginia, CHESAPEAKE REGIONAL HEALTHCARE, and OrthoVirginia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's large integrated health systems, federal health contractors, and insurance carriers generate steady demand for certified coders throughout the year.
Which Virginia cities have the most coding specialist jobs?
Charlottesville, Chesapeake, and Herndon are the Virginia cities with the most coding specialist openings. Northern Virginia's concentration of federal health agencies and contractors drives volume there, while Richmond's major hospital systems and insurance headquarters anchor that market, and Hampton Roads benefits from large regional health networks and military healthcare providers.
Are there remote coding specialist jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most healthcare roles. About 71% of coding specialist openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting that coding work is computer-based and does not require physical presence. Inpatient and specialty coding roles are most commonly offered as fully remote positions once a coder has demonstrated accuracy and productivity.
How can I get hired as a coding specialist in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a health information technology or medical coding certificate program and then applying to coding trainee or coding auditor assistant roles at Virginia's large health systems such as Sentara Healthcare or Inova Health System, which periodically run new-coder development programs. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as medical billing specialist, patient access coordinator, or health unit coordinator find it easier to move into coding. Earning your CPC or CCS credential before applying is the single biggest advantage for candidates without direct coding experience.
Where can I find and apply to coding specialist jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to coding specialist jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across health systems, federal contractors, and insurance organizations. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your credentials and preferred location or remote arrangement, and apply directly.
