- Be a strong internal advocate for our merchants, working cross functionally to make sure their highest priorities are being met.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Align Your Portfolio to Fintech Infrastructure
Affirm's Technical Director roles center on scalable payment systems, underwriting platforms, and lending infrastructure. Frame your experience around regulated financial systems, not general software architecture, so your credentials map directly to the role's domain requirements.
Target Affirm's Multi-Product Engineering Orgs
Affirm hires Technical Directors across distinct product lines like BNPL, merchant integrations, and data platforms. Identifying which org is actively scaling lets you tailor your application to a specific technical domain rather than applying broadly.
Confirm Sponsorship Intent Before Final Interviews
Ask your recruiter explicitly whether the role is approved for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship before reaching offer negotiations. Affirm sponsors across multiple visa categories, but individual requisitions can vary by team budget and headcount classification.
Prepare for PERM Timeline Realities in Leadership Roles
If you're targeting permanent residence through an EB-2 or EB-3 pathway, PERM labor certification at the director level requires a formal recruitment process through DOL. That process can take 12 to 18 months before the I-140 petition even files.
Use Migrate Mate to Surface Active Sponsorship Openings
Technical Director openings at Affirm that include active visa sponsorship aren't always flagged clearly on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Affirm roles verified for sponsorship, so you're not wasting application cycles on positions that won't support your visa.
Secure Your H-1B Transfer Before Leaving Current Status
If you're moving to Affirm from another H-1B employer, file the cap-exempt transfer petition before your last day. USCIS allows you to begin work at Affirm once the petition is received, but a gap in employment creates unnecessary status risk at the director level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Affirm sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Directors?
Yes, Affirm sponsors H-1B visas for Technical Director roles. As a fintech company operating in a talent-competitive space, Affirm has an established sponsorship process for senior technical hires. If you're currently on H-1B status with another employer, Affirm can file a cap-exempt transfer petition. New H-1B applicants without existing status will need to go through the annual USCIS lottery in April.
How do I apply for Technical Director jobs at Affirm?
You can apply through Affirm's careers page or through Migrate Mate, which surfaces Affirm's open Technical Director roles verified for visa sponsorship. Before applying, review the specific product area each role covers, since Affirm's engineering org is divided by product lines and the technical expectations differ meaningfully between teams. Tailoring your application to a specific domain significantly improves your chances.
Which visa types does Affirm commonly use for Technical Director positions?
Affirm sponsors H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT visas for technical roles, and pursues EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways for longer-term hires. At the Technical Director level, H-1B is the most common nonimmigrant category, while EB-2 is the typical permanent residence route given the advanced degree and specialized expertise requirements of the role.
What qualifications and experience does Affirm expect for Technical Director candidates?
Affirm typically looks for candidates with a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, combined with substantial experience leading engineering teams at scale. For Technical Director roles specifically, prior experience in fintech, payments, lending infrastructure, or regulated financial systems carries significant weight. Demonstrated ability to own technical strategy across multiple product teams is a consistent signal in Affirm's hiring patterns.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take when joining Affirm as a Technical Director?
For an H-1B transfer from another employer, USCIS typically processes standard petitions within three to five months, with premium processing available to reduce that to 15 business days. If Affirm is sponsoring a Green Card through PERM, the full process from labor certification through I-485 approval can take two to four years depending on your country of birth and USCIS processing volumes.
