About Anthropic
Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the Role
Anthropic’s Consumer Products team is hiring a Senior Staff Software Engineer to serve as the technical lead for Claude’s core chat experience on mobile — the surface where most people meet Claude for the first time. You’ll own the technical direction for our iOS and Android apps and shape how the chat interface evolves across mobile and web, working closely with product, design, and partner teams to deliver the most compelling way to talk to an AI.
This is a deeply hands-on staff+ role. You’ll write code, set architectural direction, and make the hardest technical calls — but the real measure of success is influence: building the credibility and partnerships that let a growing organization move together. You’ll help us figure out not just how to build, but what to build, as the product and the models underneath it evolve in tandem.
We care as much about craft as we do about capability. The right person obsesses over how the app feels — performance, polish, the small details that make software feel alive — and knows how to put systems in place so a fast-moving team can keep that bar high.
In this role, you will:
- Lead the chat experience: Own the technical strategy for Claude’s core chat surface on mobile, and influence how it evolves across web and other clients.
- Build across the org: Partner with teams like Claude Code, Cowork, and Growth so their work lands seamlessly in the app — and so the app makes their work better.
- Go deep on the platform: Push into iOS and Android internals — rendering, text, streaming, performance — to unlock experiences that aren’t possible at the app layer alone.
- Raise the bar on craft: Work side-by-side with design to ship an interface that feels fast, polished, and considered, and build the quality systems that keep it that way.
- Shape the roadmap: Bring an engineering point of view to product strategy — what we should build, in what order, and why.
You might be a good fit if you:
- Have led technical direction across teams you didn’t manage, and can point to specific moments where you built credibility and brought people along.
- Are deeply expert on at least one mobile platform — iOS preferred — including the layers below the framework: rendering, performance, memory, text.
- Have great product instincts and care about craft. You notice when something feels off, and you’ve fought for the details that make consumer software feel great.
- Have shipped consumer-scale mobile apps and put the systems in place (performance budgets, quality gates, observability) that let a team move fast without breaking things.
- Work well with product, design, and partner engineering teams — you’re the person they want in the room when a hard call has to be made.
Strong candidates may also have:
- Experience building AI/LLM-powered or real-time streaming chat interfaces
- Depth across both iOS and Android, or native + cross-platform
- A track record of seeing a multi-quarter technical strategy through from proposal to outcome
The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.
For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.
Annual Salary:
$485,000 - $625,000 USD
Logistics
Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
Required field of study: A field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience
Minimum years of experience: Years of experience required will correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position
Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Your safety matters to us. To protect yourself from potential scams, remember that Anthropic recruiters only contact you from @anthropic.com email addresses. In some cases, we may partner with vetted recruiting agencies who will identify themselves as working on behalf of Anthropic. Be cautious of emails from other domains. Legitimate Anthropic recruiters will never ask for money, fees, or banking information before your first day. If you're ever unsure about a communication, don't click any links—visit anthropic.com/careers directly for confirmed position openings.
How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.

Align your experience with AI safety systems
Anthropic's Staff Engineer roles sit at the intersection of distributed infrastructure and AI research systems. Frame your prior work around reliability, scale, and safety-critical design rather than general full-stack experience. Reviewers here notice the distinction.
Confirm your visa category before applying
Anthropic sponsors H-1B, H-1B1 visa, and E-3 visas. If you're Australian, the E-3 path avoids the lottery entirely. Know which category fits your citizenship before your recruiter screen so the sponsorship conversation doesn't stall at the offer stage.
Target roles with a systems or research engineering scope
Staff Engineer openings at Anthropic often specify infrastructure, model serving, or research tooling. Applying to roles that match your background at that level of specificity improves your odds of reaching technical rounds where sponsorship conversations become concrete.
Prepare your credentials for specialty occupation review
USCIS requires your degree to align with the role's technical scope for H-1B approval. For Staff Engineer positions in AI research, gather transcripts and documentation that demonstrate computer science, engineering, or a directly related field before the offer stage.
Track your H-1B petition timeline against the fiscal year cap
USCIS opens H-1B registration in March, with the new fiscal year starting October 1. Staff Engineers starting on OPT should confirm with their employer whether premium processing will be used, since standard adjudication can stretch several months past the cap filing window.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Staff Engineer roles
Anthropic's active Staff Engineer openings that include visa sponsorship aren't always easy to filter on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified sponsoring employers and find Anthropic roles confirmed to support international candidates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Anthropic sponsor H-1B visas for Staff Engineers?
Yes, Anthropic sponsors H-1B visas for Staff Engineer roles. The company has a consistent sponsorship track record across its engineering function, including positions in infrastructure, model serving, and research tooling. If you're subject to the annual H-1B cap, your employer initiates the registration process with USCIS in March. Roles filled by candidates already holding H-1B status with another employer may transfer without waiting for the next cap cycle.
Which visa types does Anthropic sponsor for Staff Engineer roles?
Anthropic sponsors H-1B, H-1B1 visa, and E-3 visas for engineering roles including Staff Engineers. H-1B applies to most nationalities and is subject to the annual lottery. H-1B1 is available to Chilean and Singaporean nationals and is cap-exempt. E-3 is exclusive to Australian citizens and also avoids the H-1B lottery, making it a faster path for Australians pursuing roles at Anthropic.
What qualifications and experience does Anthropic expect from Staff Engineer candidates?
Staff Engineer candidates at Anthropic are typically expected to have significant experience with large-scale distributed systems, infrastructure reliability, or ML platform engineering. A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, or a closely related field is standard and supports the specialty occupation requirement under H-1B. Depth in systems design and demonstrated impact at scale matter more than breadth across domains.
How do I apply for Staff Engineer jobs at Anthropic?
You can find and apply to Staff Engineer openings directly through Anthropic's careers page. To specifically identify roles that confirm visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which surfaces Anthropic's open positions verified to support H-1B, H-1B1 visa, and E-3 candidates. Filtering by role level and function before applying helps ensure your experience aligns with the specific engineering scope Anthropic is hiring for.
How do I manage my visa timeline when pursuing an offer from Anthropic?
If you're on OPT, your 60-day grace period and OPT expiration date should be shared with your recruiter early so the offer and H-1B registration timelines can align. USCIS H-1B registration opens in March, with employment starting no earlier than October 1. If your OPT expires before October 1, confirm with Anthropic whether a cap-gap extension or bridge arrangement is possible during the offer stage, not after.
