Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Instructional Assistant roles at universities must qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B eligibility. Make sure your degree field directly corresponds to your instructional subject area, not just education broadly, before applying.
Target departments with recurring instructional hiring
Appalachian State's STEM, business, and health sciences departments post Instructional Assistant openings with regularity. Focusing your applications on these high-volume units raises your odds of landing a role with an active sponsorship pipeline.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by visa type
Appalachian State lists multiple Instructional Assistant positions at any given time, but not all are sponsorship-eligible. Use Migrate Mate to surface only the openings where the university has a documented sponsorship track record for this function.
Ask HR directly about their PERM timeline for this role
Some Instructional Assistant positions at Appalachian State lead to permanent residence through PERM-based EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship. Ask the hiring manager or HR during the offer stage whether this pathway has been used for the specific role you're being hired into.
Build your file for a cap-subject H-1B filing
Universities are cap-exempt employers, so Appalachian State can file your H-1B petition at any point in the year without waiting for the April lottery. Gather your transcripts, credential evaluations, and employment verification letters well ahead of your intended start date.

Find Instructional Assistant at Appalachian State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Appalachian State University sponsor H-1B visas for Instructional Assistants?
Yes. Appalachian State University sponsors H-1B visas for Instructional Assistant roles where the position qualifies as a specialty occupation. As a university, it is a cap-exempt employer, meaning it can file H-1B petitions year-round without subjecting candidates to the annual lottery. The sponsorship process is typically initiated by the hiring department in coordination with the university's international office.
How do I apply for Instructional Assistant jobs at Appalachian State University?
Applications go through Appalachian State University's official HR portal, where positions are listed by department. Prepare a tailored resume, a cover letter addressing your instructional background, and any relevant transcripts or credential evaluations. If you need visa sponsorship, flag this early in the process. You can also browse current openings filtered by sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate before applying directly through the university.
Which visa types are commonly used for Instructional Assistant roles at Appalachian State University?
The most common visa types for Instructional Assistant roles at Appalachian State are H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals. For candidates pursuing permanent residence, EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process is also available for qualifying positions.
What qualifications are expected for Instructional Assistant positions at Appalachian State University?
Most Instructional Assistant roles require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a field directly related to the subject matter being taught. Graduate-level coursework or a master's degree is often preferred, particularly for roles supporting upper-division or graduate courses. Prior teaching experience, familiarity with course management software, and strong communication skills are commonly listed requirements across departments.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship for an Instructional Assistant role?
Because Appalachian State is cap-exempt, it can file your H-1B petition with USCIS at any point during the year, without the April 1 filing window that applies to most employers. That said, USCIS standard processing can take three to six months, so aligning your offer acceptance and start date with a realistic petition timeline is essential. Premium processing is available to reduce the adjudication window if your start date is urgent.
