Credential Your Degree for U.S. Academic Standards
If your terminal degree was earned outside the U.S., get it evaluated by a NACES-approved credential assessment service before applying. Appalachian State hiring committees need to confirm your degree meets the equivalent of a U.S. doctoral standard for faculty appointments.
Target Departments With Recurring Faculty Openings
Appalachian State posts Professor roles through its HR portal and HigherEdJobs. Focus on departments that list openings annually, since recurring searches often signal institutional growth and a greater likelihood of sponsorship willingness for the right candidate.
Understand How TN Status Applies to Faculty Roles
Canadian and Mexican nationals can enter as Professors under TN status without employer petition delays. Confirm your role is documented as a post-secondary teaching position, which is a qualifying TN occupation, before your offer letter is finalized.
Ask About PERM Timing During Offer Negotiations
Universities often sponsor EB-2 or EB-3 Green Cards through PERM, but the DOL process can take one to two years after hiring. Ask HR during negotiations whether the position budget includes PERM filing and what the typical faculty sponsorship timeline looks like at Appalachian State.
Align Your OPT or CPT Start Date With Semester Hiring Cycles
Appalachian State hiring follows fall and spring academic calendars. If you're on F-1 OPT, time your application so your employment authorization start date aligns with a semester start, reducing the risk of a gap between offer acceptance and authorized work commencement.

Find Professor at Appalachian State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Appalachian State University sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes. Appalachian State University sponsors H-1B visas for Professor roles, as universities are cap-exempt employers. That means petitions can be filed at any time of year without entering the annual H-1B lottery. The university's Office of International Education and Development typically coordinates the process alongside the hiring department, so ask HR to confirm internal timelines once you have an offer.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at Appalachian State University?
Applications go through Appalachian State's official HR portal, and most faculty postings also appear on HigherEdJobs. You'll typically submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, research statement, and references. International applicants should confirm visa sponsorship availability with HR before or during the interview stage to avoid surprises after an offer is extended.
Which visa types are commonly used for Professor roles at Appalachian State University?
The most common pathways for international Professors at Appalachian State are H-1B, TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), and F-1 OPT or CPT for recent graduates. For longer-term permanent residence, the university has experience with EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process filed with the DOL.
What qualifications are expected for Professor roles at Appalachian State University?
Most Professor positions require a terminal degree in the relevant discipline, typically a Ph.D. or equivalent. For professional fields, significant industry experience can sometimes supplement or substitute for a doctorate. A record of scholarly research or publication is expected for tenure-track roles, and teaching experience at the post-secondary level strengthens any application considerably.
How do I find Professor jobs at Appalachian State University that offer visa sponsorship?
